I know that they don’t give out full ride scholarships, but can I cover dorm fees with merit scholarships? Do they consider students for merit scholarships automatically or do I have to apply separately? I am an NY resident.
What merit scholarships are you talking about? If Stony Brook doesn’t give full rides…then you clearly will be expected to pay for something.
Presidential/Provost’s Scholarship
It says on the website that every honors college student receives some sort of merit aid.
But then you said Stony Brook doesn’t give full rides.
I don’t know the answer…but if you get the merit award…will this reduce any need based aid you receive from the school?
Are you TAP or PELL…or Excelsior eligible?
What are your test scores and GPA? (include SAT breakdown - don’t superscore))
Presidential and Provost’s Scholarships
Students who are currently seniors in high school who have achieved a meritorious unweighted high school average are automatically considered for this four-year scholarship. High school academic program, SAT/ACT scores, co-curricular activities, research experiences, or special talents or skills may also be taken into account. Scholarships vary based on academic qualifications
@thumper1 I meant that they don’t give out full rides in a single pack. I’m not sure about TAP or PELL, but definitely Excelsior.
@mom2collegekids I have a 95ish GPA so far and I took the March School Day SAT. Scores aren’t out yet. I’m expecting at least 1400.
@sybbie719 maybe you know the answer.
I just looked up the SUNY Stony Brook presidential scholarship…and all I could find was that it paid tuition and fees. So…if this student is eligible for excelsior…can the presidential be used for other expenses?
@saitama123 my understanding about things like excelsior…they are last payer. If you get other scholarships that pay tuition…the excelsior would not be awarded to you…because your tuition is already covered.
Call the school and ask if the presidential scholarship can be used for nothing other than tuition and fees. They will be able to tell you.
The Stony Brook website also states that students will receive only one scholarship…and it will be the most favorable one. So if you are hoping for multiple scholarships from Stony Brook…their website seems to indicate this is not the case.
Have your parents run the net price calculator
Are you low income
In our school, which consists of many students with 90+ GPA and 1400+ SAT, only three of the students got the “full tuition” Presidential Scholarship from Stony (all three of them had 1500+ SAT, but for GPA they all varied). I know another friend of mine from Brooklyn Tech who got that with a 1540 and a 97 average. She is a low-income student. Stony said that she has to pay for dorming and other miscellaneous fees because the Presidential Scholarship doesn’t cover anything beyond the explicitly stated tuition and fees.
Here is another thread of yours where you state you moved to the U.S. in January 2018. Is that correct?
Are you currently a high school junior who will be applying for admission in Fall 2018?
Do you have permanent resident status?
@mom2collegekids I am.
@thumper That is correct. I’ll be applying for Fall 2019. I have permanent resident status. About the NYS resident part, I was assuming I would be a resident by the time I apply.
" Offered scholarships will be part of the complete financial aid award package, which cannot exceed the budgeted cost of attendance. Scholarships can be applied to any of the costs associated with a student’s Stony Brook education and need not be used for tuition only. "
This is on the website. I guess I got my answer. Thanks.
Did you also see the part about Stony Brook only awarding ONE scholarship to each student? You might want to read that part too. I doubt you will get sufficient scholarships to attend Stony Brook at NO cost to your family.
@sybbie719 ??
If Stony Brook offers full tuition scholarships (which will be in the ~$6k/year range), there will be a ~$16k/year gap for state residents. If they call it a tuition scholarship, NYS residents who receive it won’t get the Excelsior because it only covers the part of tuition not covered by TAP, Pell, or other tuition scholarships.
You won’t be eligible for NYS aid if you apply this fall because you’ll have been in the state for less than a year. That means the cost of attendance will be the OOS rates (~$30k/year, not $22k).
The property your family owns overseas will affect your EFC. Figure out how much your family can afford to pay and make sure to apply to financial safeties. Commuting to a CUNY may be a good option.
I think this poster is applying for fall 2019…so I think he would be eligible for instate tuition.
First thing first
Are your parents physically present in NYS?
‘‘Tis is a simple yes or no. Since you are dependent on them as a high school student this is going to determine what you are eligible for
It is interesting to note that a “Presidential Scholarship” in the SUNY system seems to differ between the schools based on how it is awarded and the value of the award. My child is attending UB Honors College and won a Presidential Scholarship. To do so, he had to have “the numbers,” write three additional essays, go through an interview on campus - needless to say, a very competitive process. I think they award a dozen or so to each freshman class. It is a 4 year scholarship that can be applied to total cost of attendance: tuition, fees, room and board. There will be a small gap that we will have to cover all 4 years but I have calculated that this scholarship will cover about 70% of all direct costs. The gap will be covered by a token amount of TAP, student loans, and EFC. However, as already mentioned it can not be stacked with any other SUNY scholarship (like Provost) but can be stacked with Excelsior or STEM up to the total amount of attendance (we qualify for neither at this point). Why are the Presidential Scholarships different between the schools???
@sybbie719 They are.
One of your challenges may be as a new student, other than the grades that you will earn this june, the only grades on your transcript will be CR/NC. As a person coming into school during the second half of junior year, it is highly unlikely that you will be part of your school’s ranking for scholarship consideration
@sybbie719 But I went to the most competitive school in my country and I was in the top 20%. I also have the transcript.
There’s a school rank for scholarship consideration?
