I'm a sophomore. My freshman year was horrible, but I finished with around a 2.8 GPA and failed math. I was severely depressed, tried taking my own life and didn't leave my house for a year but thankfully it is behind me. I'm going back into public school for the second semester, but right now my grades are A's and B's- I'm trying to get all the classes I'm good at A+s (French, english, world history, electives) and shoot for B+s in algebra and chemistry, and I plan on getting a tutor for those two when I'm back in public school so I can have straight A's. The thing is math and science are so hard for me to comprehend, math literally makes me breakdown every lesson and is so draining. I don't know why it's so hard for me but I'm trying my best. I plan on retaking the math class I failed over the summer (geometry) or junior year. I think it will be easier because I'm starting to do better with math in algebra 2. I also plan to join color guard or crew junior year, get on yearbook, join SADD and honor society. I have a high IQ but I don't think I can really list that right? I've had no interaction with SATS so I might take a preparation course on them. Overall, I'm trying to get a 3.7 GPA and all those holistic activities. I want to be a Gator so bad because my mom is alumni and it just feels so right, I want a school with pride and to be acknowledged as a hard worker. I just feel like the thing that happened to me freshman year will ruin all that, and it was really out of my control so I don't want it to look like I'm not hardworking. I really will feel horrible if I have to go to FSU, even though I'm blessed either way since my college is financed due to a program my mom was involved in that paid for it, I just want to get into UF so bad to be part of the best. I've also taught myself graphic design and have started my own business and make my own income. Could that help when applying? I'm just so worried everything is about GPA and SAT scores, and that my failure at left-brained classes diminish all the other things I'm really good at. Also- all my classes are honors. Should I take AP english and history next year? I also am going up to French 4 and Spanish 3. Do I have any chance at all at UF?

You can still get into UF, but due to your freshman year, you have little room for error. You need to take honor/AP/AICE/IB courses and get by with almost all A’s to get your GPA back into range. However, don’t let the stress impact your health. It’s more important than your grades!

A large % of UF’s undergrads are transfer students. Even if you don’t get in as a freshman, UF can still be a possibility.

Also, keep an open mind when thinking about other schools. With UF’s holistic admissions, even those with good GPA’s/Test scores sometimes get denied, you should always have other options available.

Finally, keep in mind that UF, a large state school, may not be the best option for you. A smaller LAC may be a better fit, with smaller classes and more one-on-one interactions with your teachers. New College of Florida (NCF) is a great example and a great deal since it’s a public school.

Good Luck!

Take ap classes in French, english, and world history. Challenge yourself in the subjects you excell in and take regular classes for math and science. That’s amazing you started your own business! Keep that up!

Try reviewing for math and science on the Khan Academy on Youtube or http://www.khanacademy.org/ for more in-depth lessons. You can go back and review lessons as many times as needed.
