How to Get Off the Waitlist

This happens EVERY year at WashU. Its a superb school. But it IS St. Louis, which has WICKED winter weather. Its not the only game in town. Do what you can if you truly want to go there and I wish you luck, but frankly, they waitlist HUNDREDS and take just a handful off the list which are basically already sort of picked…as they sort of rank the waitlisters as well…last year a mere handful…why? Because they dont want to build more dorms and expand the school and every year they have housing problems finding enough places for people to stay…and they DONT guarantee housing for 4 years…so as an upperclassman you can get booted off campus.

Its a great school. My D was waitlisted last year and we never got that phone call…so we moved on.

On the other hand, they seemed to indicate that they would entertain an application for her sophomore year..and transfer in…which we considered…but I think she is going to stay where she is at.

I wish that I could give myself reasons why I wouldn’t want to go there, and I can’t seem to come up with any good ones. I went to Discovery Weekend, I met some of the nicest, most-involved, social, outgoing, intelligent, caring students I’ve ever met, sat in on classes with professors who cared about their students, showered in a really clean bathroom!!!, ate good food, and saw countless opportunities for students to be involved in the community. The weather… it’s fine with me. I live in upstate New York - after years of waiting at the end of my driveway for the school bus at 6:45 am, I’m prepared for anything.

When I was there, it just felt like it fit. It felt as though I could be in those classes taking those notes and going back to my dorm and studying them, writing those papers, going out and doing community service with people… It was perfect.

Yes, there are many more options, and I know I would be incredibly happy at Tulane, with a full-tuition scholarship and an incredible service-learning experience, or at Fordham, with NYC opportunities, or even at the state school in my hometown. But my dream is WashU, and it became so real to me when I visited.

I know kids waitlisted with 35s on ACT and great ecs/grades (like 4.6’s) … lots of APs … this is actually a school where you can be “too good” and get rejected, as mentioned above.

by the way, it’s obviously too late but kids that are perfect can apply ED to get in … that way the college knows they are interested.

I debated applying ED, but my mom had just divorced my stepdad and we were in a really shaky financial situation and I couldn’t commit to anything at that point…

I’m really amazed by your dedication.

If I was an admissions officer at any school, I would be touched by your passion and commitment.

Keep on rocking!

thanks  did anyone notice our little thread got into the “featured discussions” section at the top of every page? i had no idea that was coming

Trackie, where else did you apply? Did you tell WUSTL in your original app that they were your #1 school?

No, I did not tell them in my original app that they were my number one school. Since being waitlisted I have, though, and it’s produced positive replies from the admissions office.

I was already accepted to Tulane, Fordham, UMass Amherst, University of Rochester, and SUNY Geneseo. I’m waiting to hear from BC, Emory, Brown, and UPenn. Then, of course, I was waitlisted at WashU.

I’m willing to bet you’ll get in.
good luck! you’ve done all you can and all you need to do. enjoy the rest of senior year

one thing I’m confused on: why doesn’t wash u just give “perfect” students scholarships instead of waitlisting?

They have merit-based scholarships, but they are very specific by major and usually only one to four people get them. I applied for the Ervin scholarship but didn’t get it.

You are very inspiring. I have not recieved a decision from my first choice college yet , but if i do get wait-listed, i have a plan on what i will do to try gaining admittance. I would first visit the college, take a tour, and ask to sit in on a lecture or class. These little things get recorded in my file and would prove to the admissions committee that I am serious and truly want to go to this school. I would also try to talk to an admissions counselor, rather than send the school an e-mail. I’d talk to the counselor about how much I love the school and how honored I would be to attend it. I’d give them a written copy of this too, just in case they forgot about our little interview. If you can’t speak to a counselor, then the letter should do fine. It’s easy for me though, because this college is only 30 minutes away.

marius, those are really really good ideas. pretty much everything that you can do.

The easiest way to get off the waitlist is to qualify for one of the olympiad camps and/or get selected as a semifinalist in the PSP. This isn’t absolute, but it certainly helps a lot.

WashU doesn’t just take the most qualified applicants. They take people they think will actually attend the school. Take this situation
Student A:
31 ACT, 3.9 GPA … equal ec’s
Student B:
34/35 ACT, 4.5 GPA .. equal ec’s

I know this for a fact .. I’ve seen the smart kids at my school get rejected (even the well-rounded ones) and the “pretty smart” ones get accepted.

They might accept Student A, because they probably want to actually go. For Student B, it tends to be a backup school (but not always). That’s why it’s difficult for these very intelligent people who get waitlisted (especially when its right before ivy decisions, it can be scary).

What I have to say is:
-Good luck, there’s no harm in voicing your opinion and I really do hope you get in. You seem very passionate and that is just what colleges want.
-Has anyone heard of someone submitting “worse” test scores to WashU. I know this sounds dumb, but say a student takes the ACT 3 times, geting a 30, 33, and 34. Would they have a higher chance of getting accepted by submitting the 30? I know this sounds weird, and maybe I’m off. I have to be off, that would be terrible! Or maybe not? Someone help me :)

It’s so funny that I was reading the first NY Times article link, and right there a dean from my high school is quoted.

haha that’s funny. i love when people post articles - they’re always really interesting and give neat little tidbits of information you might not know otherwise.

I got into WUSTL but I’ll probably be saying no because they offered me almost no financial aid (and I got into Penn!). Maybe you’ll get my spot?

yay congrats lava! i’m also waiting to hear from penn, but washu is still my #1. haha wouldn’t it be nice if, when declining the offer of admission, you could designate a person on the waitlist to get your spot?

I’m waitlisted at MoHo (I’m Int’l, by the way) so when I emailed to forward on extra stuff or to try to book an on campus interview, I was told that they have everything they needed. Someone else told me to just send weekly updates (I work full time, so I’m not in school). I dropped out of my first college 4 years ago and I KNOW this is putting them off me.

How should I press harder without seeming overbearing? I want to get in there so badly. I don’t see how a decision I made 4 years ago, when I was a kid, could still come back to haunt me. As if I don’t get enough heat about it from my family & friends…

Rob: I guess yours makes sense but how would you explain this one:

Student A: ACT: 33
GPA: 4.1, ec’s etc…No demonstrated interest at all

Student B: ACT 32
GPA: 4.1…significant demonstrated interest

Same exact rank, same exact school, same exact AP’s/honors…

Who do you think Wash U admitted and who do you think was waitlisted??? Boggles the brain…
