How to get off the Waitlist

After excitedly completing my application for UMBC a couple of months ago, I finally received a reply. I was Waitlisted. I wasn't completely devastated because I knew there was hope. But before I go tactlessly blundering about the in-boxes of overworked admissions counselors, I wanted to know if there are any things I could do to make my chances of getting off this forsaken list better. This college is my top choice college by all means and I would love to go here. So, any advice as to what I could do would be received with great gratitude!

Not to be mean or anything, but if UMBC was your top choice college, why didn’t you work harder in school? You know, getting decent grades, decent SAT score (avg. @ UMBC is 1000-1200 M+VR), and decent EC passions…

To get of the wait list, you need to show them that you have improved significantly in your senior year in preparation for college. You need to show them that you are not a low-life who cruises through school and has no passion for learning.

Thank you, no offense taken. The one thing that is probably holding me back is my grades. Due to circumstances my grades throughout high school (9th - 11th) were barely above average. I do however, have a strong passion for learning and that is why I want to further my education at UMBC. But in my senior year I have shown significant improvements in my grades so I’m guessing (and hoping and praying) that this will help me. I was ridiculed for working so hard my senior year by some, but I’m hoping it’s going to pay off anyway.

Hey Serial. I’m kinda in the same boat with you. I have a high GPA and a lot of extracirrculars/awards but I was waitlisted due to my SATs so even if I wanted to send in my grades it wouldn’t reflect a dramatic change. This is my absolute number one school but they just let me down yet somehow I still have faith… I hope that we both get in because I personally think it’d be unfair since I know a couple of students at my school who have a very low GPA but their SATs were almost a 1600 (combined all three sections) and they were accepted. Just our luck huh?

Yeah. Best of luck you guys. The May 1 deadline is looming ever closer and I’m sure if you haven’t heard back yet you’re at the edge of your seat, waiting. I know I am and I can’t wait to hear good or bad. I’ve even taken a daily regime of checking the mailbox (which I never did before) after school. All we can do is hope, pray, wait, and sometimes even cry (it helps…just kidding guys). Once again, best wishes to everyone on the wait list for the Fall 2010 Semester at UMBC: An Honors University in Maryland.

Guys! I got accepted! Awesome!
