I am a freshman in district 2 and this time of year, freshmen get to choose their sophomore classes. My prospective classes are:
AP Calc AB
APUSH
Honors Spanish 4
Honors English 2
Band x2
and for the sciences…
the most advanced people are taking AP Bio and AP physics. however, I was wondering if AP computer science would be better for applying to NCSSM. I know it’s an easier AP class, but there is a whole essay on the NCSSM application dedicated to technology/computer experience. All I would be able to write about this is Microsoft Word, PPT, Excel, Google Drive… all basic stuff. Or I could write about using a 30 year old GPS to draw topographic maps on geology field studies with my grandpa.
With all this said, do you think I should switch out AP Bio or AP physics for AP computer science?
Think about it like this, there are hundreds of students applying. Why should NCSSM accept you? The only reason NCSSM will accept you is because you are unique, you stand out, and you do more than everyone else. I can’t advise you on which course to take. Though, what I can advise you is to be different. Take everything (rigorous of course) what every other sophomore is NOT taking. For example, instead of taking an Honors science take the most advanced science your school offers and do well in that class. Essentially, w/e you take, NCSSM prefers their students taking THEIR courses.
The most advanced classes my school has are AP Physics C 1&2 and AP Chem. You need Calc to take phys c so I can’t take it next year. By doing something different I could take APES or AP comp sci, replacing AP bio or phys, but is that rigorous enough? Are you at NCSSM or an alumni/parent of an alumni? btw I’m in District 2 at a huge public high school
