Looking for feedback on what my daughter can do at this point to improve her chances of getting into UF. She is entering her senior year this fall at a top rated public school.

Her stats are:
Florida resident
3.92 weighted GPA (about a 3.85 weighted "college" GPA)
3.57 unweighted GPA
All of her academic classes have been honors, pre-AP or AP level
2 AP classes her junior year (no scores yet), 4 AP classes senior year
28 ACT
300 plus community service hours from a wide range of activities (many from foreign missions trips over the summers to Central and South America)
High School soccer and competitive travel soccer (team went on to compete for final 4 in state)
High School cross country
National Honor Society and Jr. National Honor Society
Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society)
Spanish Honors Society
FCA leader
Youth group leader
Spanish Club and other community service clubs sponsored by her school
starting the new teen volunteer program at our new local hospital this fall
She plans on pursuing pre-pharmacy or pre-med (Physicians Asst. program) and would like to take her talents internationally for medical missions trips. She plans to incorporate her story/stories in this essay.

Any tips? It's really too late to push up the GPA prior to application time and we are awaiting results from the June 11th ACT.

It looks like your daughter is doing tremendously well in being involved with the community. Her ACT score is within the standard of admitted students, too. The only thing I see that can pose a problem for her is her GPA. As you said, it’s a little late to push it up any higher, but she can always excel her senior year. It’s really good to see that she’s taking four AP courses her senior year. It’s really important that seniors don’t slack off because that could be a deal breaker.

She could take the SATs even though her ACT score is fine. Only advice I could give is that for her to do really well her senior year to up her GPA and write a really good essay with a hook for the college application. Good luck to your daughter!

Thanks for the reply kjnguyen! I am curious if UF considers grades during the senior year at all since applications are made in the fall prior to the 1st semester grade completion. Any insight into this? I know she plans on working hard but it would be good to know if they will actually “count” in UF admissions.

I remember when a UF rep came to my high school, she was telling us how UF prefers the kids who have a rigorous curriculum with a decent GPA. I believe the lowest unweighted GPA that was accepted in my school is 3.3 on the traditional 4 point scale. Assuming she doesn’t drop any of her AP classes senior year and her GPA does not go down any further, she should still be able to be a decent applicant.

I think she has a pretty decent shot. I was accepted with a lower test score but my GPA was higher. I know they put a lot of strain on the GPA and extra curriculars, too. But she most likely will be accepted.

Slinger123, no problem! I’m glad I could help. On the issue of checking for grades senior year, UF does look at your daughters transcripts which also includes her senior year grades and such. By the end of the year, they’ll request a final transcript seeing if she continued to do well throughout the whole year. However, they put more emphasis on grades prior to senior year, but look at the intensity of classes one takes their final year.

If you want to know more information about how UF sees an application, I recommend scheduling a tour with UF. It’s really informative and explains to applicants what they’re looking for.

Great tips and feedback folks! We actually did the tour early April along with 3 other universities so some of the details have slipped my mind as it seems like the 4 state universities we visited have just a few little variances in their admission considerations but mostly the same criteria. However, I remember that both FSU and UF especially valued a strong senior schedule. When we discussed my daughter’s chances for the other universities with her guidance counselor she said there would be no problem. With UF, on the other hand, she said she’s seen kids get in with lower stats and kids with better stats get denied…no rhyme or reason. The best advice it seems is to continue working very hard and not slip! Let’s just say it’s going to be a long 8 months ahead…

What her guidance counselor said is true. There were several kids at my school that were shoe ins for UF, but didn’t get accepted and students how had low stats but managed to get in. Overall, they’re looking for a well-rounded student and I think your daughter has a good shot. Best of luck to your daughter!
