How to Improve CR?

stuck at 650 CR, what steps should i take in improving CR by 60-70pts?

Take a lot of practice tests? Study vocab? what?

So could anyone offer me some advice?

Critical Reading is tough to prepare for because you can't really study for it. Doing multiple practice tests is probably your best bet. If possible, try to learn to read faster while maintaining a high level of comprehension (look up any speed reading program, like eyeQ). Also, knowing the roots or derivations of words might help you to discern definitions. I studied vocabulary throughout the school year (for English class, we completed 20 15-word vocab. units during the year). If you have time this might help.

Bottom line, try to read fast and stay calm.

thanks, and could anyone summarize what may be the best way to get a better chance at the Jerome Fisher program?
If denied, would i have a better chance applying to wharton/or SEAS?

best way to increase Critical Reading score?
what is the best book to use?
I plan on purchasing 'The Official Study Guide' by Collegeboard

magnetschoolCA, if you really live in CA, look for some decent private tutors. They can be very helpful and I don't mean "big" company tutors ---- there was a popular discussion about how they are not "good."

If you plan on self-teaching, I honestly do not know. My CR is around 500's (yes I know it sucks) but I think just practicing is best way.

Practice, yes. But practice smart, not hard or blindly.

Do a timed practice CR section. Go back and fix/check all the wrong answers.
THen, go back and check/go over all the correct answers. Did you get em correct b/c a certain word in the answer gave a key clue, or did you get them correct b/c you got lucky?

Lastly, go back to the passage and HIGHLIGHT OR UNDERLINE the EXACT phrase, word, sentence, or paragraph that gives the clue for the correct answer. so basically find the supporting evidence in the passage for EACH AND EVERY ANSWER.

That last technique is the hardest but the most vital as well to improvment. It took me about a month to get it...but of course I learn slowly.

But I have raised my CR score from 4-6 mistakes in each section to 1-2 mistakes per section.

if you want books get barrons cr or mcgraws..theyre pretty good pratice..WHATEVER YOU DO..KAPLANS IS THE WORST BOOK EVER!! ok thats an exaggeration but u get the idea..anyway kaplans is too simply and the questions do not even come close to the cb tests. i agree with cavalier in that private tutors are best..prep classes its not all about you and frankly you need that individual help. but if you are VERY self disciplined and learn well independently (unlike me) then private tutors are a waste of your lovely parents money.

i SECOND that .. KAPLAN WORSENS YOUR SCORES .. contrary to all those reviews on Amazon. I did better before without doing the practices on Kaplans beause they were wayyy too EASY!

Well how I did it was I just did practice tests over and over and over and over again. It increased my CR score by quite a bit. But then my Writing score decreased by quite a bit as well, so meh.

tofulover ,
I will try your method !!! So far I am stuck with 3-4 mistakes per section.

Read, read, read.
Then study some vocab that is likely to come up on the CR section.
Then,
read,
read,
read.
And then, read some more.
