how to improve scores

I want to improve my English, Math, Science scores for June test. I want to score a 25 on English , 27 on Math, and a 25-27 ON THE science.

You should check out the Princeton Review’s Cracking the ACT 2009. I studied with it for about half an hour to an hour nightly a week and half before the test and ended up getting a 29 for my first time. It offers two practice tests in the book and gives you the anwsers with detailed explanations. It also has chapters dedicated to each section and subsection of the test. Its very easy to navigate through and is not just filled with monotonous text. If you need to brush up on one aspect of something, this book can help. I will use it again when i take the ACT is again, Hoping to get a 31-32. I would recommend it to anyone.

do you have the redbook?

I did all 3 practice tests in the red official ACT book and went from a 27 to a 31. I am looking to get a 32 or higher though, and to do so, I have purchased the Barron’s ACT book. I hear from other CC users that this book is good to use after the red official ACT book because this Barron’s book is harder than the actual test and that it makes the real thing seem much easier. I will post an update on how it is when I start doing the work in it.

@marcr92. If you take the 4/2009 test but you do , lets say “real bad” on it. And then take the 6/2009 test but do better on it , and send scores to colleges. I had sent the scores of the 4/2009 to colleges when I register, I didnt know I was going to down that bad. Do colleges get both the 4/2009 and the 6/2009 scores.

@ufcollins.How many weeks before the test you study for w/ that Book. Just saying.

No more than two weeks to be honest. I would probaly say like a week and a half. I really didn’t spend too much time or effort. It was easy reading where it was factual information about the test and lessons. The practice test were an excellent representation of the actual test IMO. I got a 29 the first time and i wouldn’t consider myself a genius or anything like that. I mean i got an 1130 on the SAT with no studying so you can see that this book truely helps

i went from a 22 in english to a 34 in english after doing the 3 tests in the red book and going over my errors.

I take my ACT tomorrow and have that princeton review test. what do you recommend me study to bump up my score? i only have a couple of hours :</p>

It depends on what your strengths and weaknesses are. For me, it was geometry. So i reviewed some of the stuff they outlined including terms which i would have to know to answer a question, such as complimentary and supplimentary. For english, i didnt do much ‘studying’, but i just did the two test provided. Although, you can read the bit they have in the book. I read more the strategies for the english section than the discussion on things like pronoun usage and all that. For reading, i dont really know since i didnt study at all. I have always been a strong reader so i did no reviewing. Im not sure what tips they provide, but when taking the test, make sure you keep the tone of the author in mind since its usually a question and i would suggest underlining/annotating while reading the passages. Mark anything that you think is of importance. For science, i would advice skipping the introductions and details about the experiments except on the competing scientist’s voice one where two scientist with differing views are discussed. For that one, you have to read, but thats all it is and being able to draw info from that and comphrehend their POV. But as far as sections pertaining to graphs and tables, i would skip right to the questions. Read the carefully but dont spend too long on one problem (remember: no points off for guessing if you have to). Really focus on what the question asks and break it down. The answer is almost always in the graphs and tables. Take your time, but realize you only have 35 minutes.

Hope that helps. Good Luck Tomorrow

I just found out I got a 28 on my first try. I used the Barrons book. I thought it was really good. Their questions are harder than the actual exams, so don’t beat yourself up if you don’t to well on their test. After finishing the book and two of their practice tests I didn’t do so hot, but then I took the official practice test that ACT gives out and I got like a 33. It’s actually quite relieving when you take the test and you realize it’s not nearly as hard as you thought it was.
