My only leadership positions are being first chair in two of my musical groups. Other than that, I don't really have any leadership positions. How do I make up for this in my application? I am still a junior so I have time to make adjustments

bumpity bump

metsfan9: it seems like you have missed out on leadership b/c you really don’t have a good idea what leadership is. It’s not some titular thing. It’s what you do, who you are. You don’t magically make up for it unless you really desire it – not because you feel it’s something to cross off on your list of things to do to get into a top college.

BTW: being first chair means everyone else isn’t as good as you. I wouldn’t call that leadership.

Start your own club or volunteer group or blog or something else, possibly music related, or related to a subject you are interested in studying in college. My daughter started a club as a junior, got 50 people to sign up, and won related state and national awards, all before applying to college as a senior. At the time it never crossed her mind to do this for recognition of leadership skills – she was just interested in a course she took at school, and her teacher was wanting to sponsor a student club related to the course, and she volunteered to lead the club. It happened like that. So look for some opportunity to lead that is a natural outgrowth of your current interests, classes and activities.

Help other people. Serving is leading. And you often don’t need to be elected to serve.
