I am going to be a high school freshmen this upcoming school year. I will be in AP human geography, secondary math 2 honors (basically algebra 2), physics with technology honors, English 9 honors along with French 3 and Intro to Health sciences. I am also going to be doing swim team, orchestra, cross country, track and HOSA. I will be at school from 6:00 until 4:00 or later every single day Monday-Friday. On top of my full schedule already, I will be doing 3 online classes which are secondary math 3, Heath 2, and computer technology. I was wondering what tips you could give me to manage all of my homework and studying without going insane. And any tips you have on the AP class I would greatly appreciate!
- drop secondary math 3. You’re taking 2, that’s plenty - and you’re already 2 years ahead of schedule, no need to do something insane like taking 2 and 3 at the same time . Drop the other 2 online classes c I’m guessing they’re required for graduation and you don’t want to take them during the year: take them over the summer.
- you can onlyvdo one sport per season. So, pick each one. Hosa should be lightweight. Orchestra can be a time suck so if you do that, don’t do a sport at the same time (you may encounter schedule conflicts anyway). By the way, sports are a juice EC to have, but they only benefit you in admissions if you’re rexruitzble, and they means being good at ONE sport. No need to compete in three!
- you have six periods per day. How do you start school at 6???!! That’s insane and VERY VERY disruptive to your metabolism. Adolescent bodies don’t function well that early in the morning. Do everything you can to start around 8 am (I’m guessing you’re not one of the lucky students whose schools typically start at 9.) in addition, make sure you have 9 hours of sleep every night. (if you started school at six it’s mean going to bed at 8 tops. You should be going to bed between 9 and 10, and getting up between 6:30 and 7:00). If you don’t have enough sleep every night, you hurt your brain, your physical health, and your mental health.
- for AP human geography, buy the textbook ahead of time, flip through the chapters read what strikes your fancy. Or buy the British icgse geography text for like $20 and start reading in June. You’ll get some knowledge already And pick up the method during the year.
- the most important thing you can do Not is READ. Read any kind of books you like but give yourself goals. Books you can start with: kafir boy, my name is malala, To kill a mockingbird, Ender’s game, Pride&prejudice, Fahrenheit 451, Brave new world… Look at your high school’s summer reading list for 9th grade and pick books from there.
@MYOS1634 @highschooltips Yes, the importance of sleep cannot be reiterated enough. I overwhelmed myself with 7 APs this year and I am extremely sleep deprived. The rare instances that I’ve gotten 9 or 10hrs were not sufficient to make up my lost sleep. In addition, I skipped lunch nearly everyday this year in order to do school work so I would run about 10hrs each school day without food. Make sure you eat! If you don’t procrastinate and stay focused you can balance your workload and still hit the hay at a reasonable time!
