*How to Organize EC's/Awards on Common App??*

Ok this is super-long but if you read it i would VERY MUCH appreciate it. i just feel like organization is key, and i want to convey all this info w/ limited space. if someone has a few moments, could you help me out on how i should organize this stuff and what should actually be included on the app?

ECs, in order of interest:

1-creative writing: various schoolwide and national publications, spend about 15 hours a week doing it

2-community service: lots of different projects including habitat for humanity (i did a weeklong trip to NC and while there was selected by a local kiwanis club to represent our group as a whole, which they were honoring.. no specific award but they invited me to a meeting and had a kind of ceremony to honor and thank us... do you think i can put this under awards/honors, and what would i say about it?), boston foodbank, rosie's place (battered women's shelter), annual swim for life (sponsered 1.4 mile harbor swim for aids), kidstime, freshmen orientation leader, etc.. *i think i'm going to list particular comm service projs in that extra info box, and just write "see attached" in the box

3-varsity swimming: senior co-captain, varsity letters all 3 years (i didnt swim freshman yr b/c i played field hockey)

4-spanish exchange program: over the summer (lang/culture classes and homestay w/ a spanish family)

5-church youth group: weekly meetings, service projects, i was a group representative

6-confirmation advisor for freshmen being confirmed this year (probably listing these 2 things separately, what do you think?)

7-key club: 4 yr member, *proably going to list this separately from community service since i did a lot of service outside of key club, not just to "get hours". is this okay or does it look like i'm trying to fill up lines? (because i'm not, i just thought it owuld be better to show the depth of my interest in particular things rather than listing a bunch of wide-ranging things)

**otherwise i could put lacrosse, which i did freshman and sophomore year,
photo club or spanish club, both of which i did but didnt spend a ton of time w/, or field hockey which i played only freshman yr (but was the reason i didnt swim all 4 years)

~

Awards/Honors:

Western Reading Services: Poetry selected for national publication in North Fork Review's annual anthology

American Poets Association: Poetry selected for national publication in annual anthology

Honor Roll: Every term of high school

National Merit Scholarship Corporation: Commended Student

Elected Most Improved Varsity Swimmer of 2004

Kiwanis Club Honor: Selected to represent Habitat for Humanity service group, honored by Kiwanis Club of Rocky Mount, North Carolina for serving the community.

*do these awards all sound ok/legit? i'm a little worried baout the last one since it didnt have a specific title but was more just like an honor

bump........

I believe the awards section on the common app says "Academic Awards and Honors." You should list your most improved swimmer award, and your key club honor up in the activities boxes, as they are not academic.
As far as the order the appear on the app, I believe they should be listed in order of importance to you, which seems to be what you did. They all seem reasonable and noteworthy activities. Good luck.

A college could not care less if you were on the honor roll. I'd suggest you leave it out unless you want to look desperate.

A.S.A.P.- thank you! you are right about the academic honors thing-- thanks for pointing that out!

dhy322- my gc and a book i read on college admissions would beg to differ. why not put it on?

american's poets association might be a scam. google it, with the word "scam".

nevermind, that was another one w/ a similar name.
