How to pay for BU?

Put simply, BU costs a lot of money.

How do current students actually afford to go there without being significantly in debt. For those who attend BU now, I would love to know what kind of financial aid package you received, the amount of grant money, work study opportunities, etc.

I’ve done plenty of research on BU. I really like it and I think I have a good shot of getting in, the price is the only thing that concerns me.

Tuition + Room/Board: $52,124

Family contribution (per year): $5,000
Average BU Grant: $23,730

Remaining: $23,394

Would you be willing to sell yourself?

But seriously, if you really want to go there, go, do really well the first year, and go to admissions and ask for a scholarship.

If your family contribution is that low and your scores are high enough, you’ll get a good scholarship. BU gives the most money to kids with high need and high scores. If you’re in that category, you should be ok. There’s also tons of work study or on campus jobs. I worked in an office and made 10 bucks an hour, which paid for all of my living expenses. You may have to bite the bullet and take out a little in loans, but it’s worth it within reason.

There are plenty of work-study jobs all around campus. Do they pay well? Usually just around minimum wage, but you will definitely get one if you look.

Quickie jobs also abound. There is a board listing on the student link where people can ask for some small jobs they need done. This can be anything from raking leaves to tutoring SATs.

Have you applied and submitted your FAFSA yet? Like BUBailey said, high scores and low family contribution usually leads to a good aid package. I hit around that range and received roughly 20k in grant and much of the rest in loans. Do I have some debt? Yes. Do my parents pay for a good part of my college? Yes.

Is it worth it in my opinion? Absolutely. I don’t think that I would trade my situation for a full-scholarship at some state school, but I am also fortunate enough to have parents who saved a good bit of money for my college. Compare your offers from different colleges and make a good decision. I think you’ll find BU will treat you decently.

You can also apply for RA jobs for your junior and senior years, which takes off about 13,000 a year. Totally worth it.
