How to prepare for the weather? Suggestions?

Want to make Snow Angels? Go in to the Arboretum. Plenty of undisturbed snow there after a snowfall. It is a stone’s throw for Markley and close to the rest of the Hill dorms.

All of you U of M wannabees that are concerned about how “builtup” Ann Arbor is - make sure you check out the Arb, as it is called locally. Go to Google Earth and type in "Nichols Arboretum Ann Arbor Michigan. Hill, flat space, lots of trees, just a great outdoor space.

Just bring scarves, thick down coat(s) with hoods, fleece jackets, gloves (thick cotton type), cotton socks, winter hats, and waterproof snow boots. They don’t even have to be the fashionable Uggs. I have leather boots that keep my feet warm during the winter. Also bring corduroy pants (keep your legs warmer than jeans or khakis), turtlenecks, and sweaters.

I know people are nervous to experience Michigan winters, but seriously, they are mild compared to states such as Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Dakotas. Now those are some places that can become severely cold (down to negative 40!) in the winter.

Oh, that Northwestern game was on SUCH a lousy day!!

Anyway, I grew up in a similar climate, so I don’t have the adjustment issues, but I find long underwear (for legs) essential. There is something about cold air hitting bare skin (which it will, creeping into the gap between skin and jeans…unless you wear really tight pants) that sucks the life right out of me. I wear long underwear every day that it’s cold, and it cuts the misery level waaaaaay down.

Grew up in Michigan.

Attended the U of Michigan.

Never in my 4 years did I wear long underwear. It’s not that cold. Temps in the teens is unusual. You might get 5-7 days of single digit. Most winter days it’s in the low to mid 20s. When Ann Arbor gets heavy snow (4 inches+), it is usually in the high 20s to low 30s. Those temps make for a lot of fun. When I was there we would “steal” the metal trays from the cafeteria and go traying on any nearby hill.

Long underwear is essential for the FL transplants. My D thought I was crazy when I bought it for her, then after it started really getting cold she begged me to send her more.

Doesn’t long underwear make you sweat when you go inside? DS hates being hot (which makes me think he’ll like the Michigan weather - once he gets acclimated.)

I moved here from FL in 2005 and never wore long underwear. I was just cold my first year, and then I adjusted. It is cold in winter but you’ll get used to it, where ever you come from.

lol im on a different boat. i’m from alaska and i think the summers are too damn hot/humid here.

They’re humid here too…

by here i meant michigan. oops

Oh, okay…

Well, the summers are certinly better than they are in FL.

The first snowfall usually brings the annual West Quad vs. South Quad snowball fight.

^ Yeah that fight rocks! Alarm gets pulled, DPS closes off traffic, and people unleash their studying stress…look for the token guy/guys wearing nothing but boxers.

“west quad sucks”…“south quad sucks”…LOL

here in michigan, we just pray for snow for the sake of snow days.

^From what I’ve heard you don’t get snow days in college.

Really, just travel around the world … go to the North Pole then San Francisco then to the equator to experience everything …

Or just come here and be surprised. Enjoy the diversity of weather. It’s quite interesting.

Here in Michigan we experience pretty much a wide range of weather. Be prepared for cold, snowy winters that make you want to go outside and be a little kid or if you’re less active go home and cuddle up with a book and a nice cup of hot chocolate, cool springs that make you excited for summers, or hot summers that make you want tons of ice cream (btw hasn’t it been hot these past 2 days???)…

^^ Yes, it was 93’F in Ann Arbor. I’m glad I took a sick day!!

Be prepared for very wacky weather in Michigan. There is a reason why folks say:

"You know you’re from Michigan if…

You’ve had to switch on the heat and the air conditioning in the same day.

The only place in the world can you experience all four seasons in one day."

It’s raining and a very comfortable temperature now though :)

^^^^Get ready to turn off the air and turn on the furnace! ;-)

It’s really nice on this part of town… No need for heat.

And our AC is broken :frowning: The coolness is very welcome here.
