michigan weather?!?

hey guys i was just wondering coming from a very warm area can you let me know how the weather is during fall semester, obviously its cold, but do i need to stock up on sweaters and hoodies galore or idk i just need to kno wut exactly to buy clothing-wise to live in the ann arbor area for the next 4 years...and could u please be specific cuz seriously guys this is the first time i EVER had to buy a real winter coat THANKS!

For most of the fall, one or two hoodies should suffice, unless you have a big issue with clothes not being "clean". A lot of people I know don't have an issue with wearing a favorite pair of jeans or hoodie for a week straight. If you're more into sweaters, get some of those. You'll also either need an umbrella or a light water-resistant jacket for when it rains, because it can pout. Once it gets to be later in November/December, you're going to want to have a very warm coat along with hat and gloves for walking to class.

What exactly is a "real winter coat"? (material, length, etc.) Do people dress like marshmellows in the winter?

All of this is dependent based on quite a few factors. Firstly, the weather in general: during the winter, temperatures in MI can range from ten to forty-five degrees Farenheit. If it's considerably windy it will feel much colder.

Where are you from? What sort of climate do you normally experience? Ann Arbor is going to feel very cold if you're from Tahiti.

"Real winter coat" is mostly based upon your preferences and what you think you'll need. I go for longer wool coats - they're hard-wearing and versatile - but I do keep a very warm down parka around for very cold occasions. (I haven't decided whether or not I'll be taking it with me this year since I don't often wear it.)

What you want to wear is based mostly upon personal preferences. Leather and wool are good, synethetics are fine too. Down is nice, make sure you get something with a decent lining. Carhartts have been fashionable in recent years. I'm not sure why this is so, but they are warm and they'll last pretty much forever as far as any college student is concerned. Length is basically your style and what you're comfortable with. But it's not like everyone in MI wears the same type of coat. Layering your clothing is reccommended, however.

Something I would recommend would be a good pair of boots or heavy shoes. I see far too many people walking about in December wearing canvas sneakers. Four seasons means two pairs of shoes minimum.

For the outdoors, you'll want a thick coat. Multiple layers. Something like Columbia or North Face. Also get some gloves and a decent hat. You'll be fine. You don't need the long johns, the ski mask, it's not that bad.

The normal outfit is Jeans and a Hoodie/Fleece/Sweater. Khakis are usually not thick enough to hold out the cold, I remember looking at everyone's legs, I had khakis on, and I stood out. Everyone wears Jeans. You'll also want some Long Sleeve T-Shirts.

I should mention that once you get indoors, it's not going to really matter what's on your top if you wear a coat. You can wear what you want.

Umm, will I look like a fool if I wear a parka during September? It really never gets below 65 where I'm from.

I hear September is actually pretty similar to Alabama...maybe 5-10 degrees lower on some days. I know you're from Florida, but...it'll just be like winter for you, so it shouldn't be too bad...

Yes, you will look stupid. 65 degrees is shorts weather here. No one wears pants/sweatshirts until it gets in the 50s.

So when does it get in the 50s?

And I think he meant that it never gets under 65 degrees where he lives, not that he'll be wearing a parka when it's 65 degrees outside.

It will hit the 50s in October, that's usually when the pants come out.

50? Damn. That's parka weather for me.

wow thanx guys! lol

I find long underwear goes a long way towards making winter bearable. Then again, I'm not a student anymore so I can't wear jeans daily. Anyway, they make long underwear now that is pretty thin and yet comfortable. For women a great brand/style is "Cuddle Duds" and the various cheaper knockoffs (such as those sold at Target).

there's long underwear? wow, i'm really not ready for michigan!

I've never worn long underwear, I don't think you'll need it, although some like it.

And it will get gradually cooler, you'll do fine. You'll move in and wish you had A/C the first few weeks. And then it will go to 70s, 60s, 50s, break, 40s, 30s, break, 20s, 20s, lol, you get the drift.

And if you can't handle it, hey, i'll switch schools with you. I'm 300 miles warmer, lol. And you can take my tests for me :)
