In the Chance Me entries, I’ve seen a lot of STEM profiles that published papers in their sophomore/junior year with professors from Harvard, Stanford, etc. How does one go about contacting professors/universities for research work or publication? My main interest is conducting research in the biology and genealogy field and I’d love to gain research experience or potentially an internship there, even if it’s virtual. If anyone has any recommendations or links that would be super helpful.
In most cases these connections are made by well connected parents. The kids don’t go out and find the professors by themselves.
As an adult, whenever I see a kid that has a prestigious sounding connection, I assume there was a parent facilitating.
@me29034 While privilege may certainly be one cause, a lot of my friends and I have reached out to professors via email. Due to our good grades and strong independent research, we were able to secure internships through that route and some of us even published papers. So, you don’t necessarily have to have connections… it is possible to get an internship and publish a paper with pure hard work.
Perhaps your high school science teachers can give you suggestions on which professors in the area have been open to student involvement in the recent past. @violin177
