research with professor

Hello everyone, I am a high school sophomore who is very interested in genetics, and science to be more broad. I want to act on these interests and I was wondering if it would be to informal to contact a local professor and ask to participate in a research project he or she is involved with. I understand that I would not have a main role in the research, but I at least want to help out in some way just so I can observe. Have any of you ever done something like this? Also, I was thinking about starting my own research and asking a professor to be a mentor. I think that route is a little bit more common. Please let me know your past experiences or thoughts!!

If you find the right professor, you might be able to do this. I’d guess that a summer internship would be your best bet. I don’t know where you are, but you might be able to search the Internet to see if any professors in your area have taken on high school students in the past. Good luck!
