My scores came in and I received in the 600s (almost 700s) for every subject with minimal (virtually no) prep, except for CR . I want all my scores to be above 600 and I accomplished that will all scores except my CR (by a long shot...) I plan on retaking in October, can I have some advice on how to approach and study for the CR portion? Reading has always been a weak spot for me... all answers are appreciated, Thanks!

I’m no expert in-fact I only scored a 590 on my CR, but since no one has responded and I hate when that happens. People usually say do a lot of reading for the passages and study vocabulary words. I believe that is the portion of the test that includes “SAT words.” So I guess that’s what I’d do if I were you, study vocab and do practice tests. You’re really smart if you can get nearly 700 on the other parts. You should get it easy.

I’m struggling myself

I second Noitaraprep’s guide (the first link that Annl233 posted). You should also look at the pinned topics in the SAT prep section for Xiggi and silverturtle’s guides. Both have great strategies for CR that should get you to the 600+ range.

^Completely agree. Also check out Erica Meltzer’s website and if you want an additional resource buy her book - The Critical Reader. Be careful, if you put in a lot of time and follow this advice you may exceed your goal for CR. :)

I recommend investing in study guide books like SAT 2400 (Barrons), SAT Critical Reading Workbook (Barrons), and Gruber’s Complete SAT Critical Reading Workbook for the CR Passages. Using those books and understanding the strategies for the passages will help you with the comprehension. You have to find your own way of doing it. Does going straight to the questions work better? Or does it work better if you read the whole thing and then work through the questions (occasionally flipping back)?

For vocabulary, I recommend Googling SAT vocabulary words and SAT Power Vocab by Princeton Review. Make it a goal to go through at least one letter a day, e.g. all the E words in one day. Sometimes, if you’re determined, you can proceed further but pace yourself so you don’t burn out. Remember, it’s important to retain the knowledge!

Unfortunately, you’re in the weird gap where they’re phasing this SAT out but you still have to put your best effort towards it. I wish you the best of luck!

I got a 690 on CR without studying (this was my highest subscore) and basically I just read the passages very quickly and then answered the author’s purpose and basically the questions that require reading the entire passage. Then I read the questions that refer back to lines and went to those lines and searched for the answer. When two answers were very close I came up with the solution by seeing which one is directly related to the passage. The key for me is realizing which answer makes the most sense for the passage, not me.EXAMPLE: I may think the passage was confusing in the beginning but by analyzing the passage and noticing a key and word or phrase which contradicts confusing completely, I’m able to reduce that possibility.
This was probably really confusing lol this just works for me and was the best way i could explain it, good luck!
