How to research

Whenever i ask peopel this, eveyrone tells me to email a local professor or medical expert at a college or hospital and ask if i can tag along. But this seems AMAZINGLY awkward to me. Should i just say "hi can i tag along? I'm only a high school sophmore with a 3.5 but i'm sure i can help with your uber advanced phD thesis". Other people i know who do research actually have connections from parents and stuff.

I really want to do research but don't know where to begin...

maybe this will help:

Does your high school have a research program? If so, you can speak to the advisor who may know of a mentor available, or a program you could apply for.

If not, I would suggest googling to your hearts content. Many universities offer programs for high school students interested in research. Some offer stipends while others want a fee. I would suggest looking into this ASAP since many of the programs have deadlines coming up if they have not passed already.

Additionally, look into local universities near you, and perhaps find a professor there willling to work with you on a project. A lot of researching professors will help students looking to apply to INTEL or Siemens or any other big science e fair.

I've been in research throughout high school, so I hope I've been able to help you some. Feel free to ask any other questions!

the ones with aterisk should be replaced by "scholar holler" with no spaces between them.
This link talk all bout research and even gives you instructions on how to write a such email and everything. I would do this if i were going to contact prof, but i don't have to do it because I've been accepted into a summer reearch program.

well what i would do is identify about 15-20 professors from a local university (since most are likely to say no anyway, lol) and send them an email...like try to take a look at what they are doing and write a couple sentences about your background about the subject (although i completely made up what i said about experience with microbial antibiotic resistance). then attach a resume of some sort, with any science accomplishments highlighyed, and maybe a rec letter from a science/research teacher at your school. odds are, at least 1-2 will say yes out of 10-15 professors, but don't expect or ask for any money...haha
