How to safely use a fake word?

For one of my application essays I chose to take a more fun approach and I am using a word that is, well not exactly a real word. How should I go about doing this grammatically semi-correct. For example, should I put it in italics or type quotations around it? I originally wrote the essay as a joke but now I like it more than my actual response so I am going to use it. Yes, I am aware this is pretty risky to use in an essay that will be sent to a single digit admission rate school. Also if anyone is interesting in reading it, it is only 150 words and I would love opinions.

Some context would be helpful, but there’s no need to draw more attention to it than necessary. I used eye dialect in an essay and I didn’t think it was a big deal or risky at all.

Use a fake word, but hedge against its meaninglessness…

If you use italics or quotation marks, then you’re telegraphing something is fishy with this word. It defeats any ostensible purpose, outside of being corny.

Use a fake word. I think the person in charge of reading these submissions can detect a word that does not exist, a fake word. Their job is detecting confusion, errors, and irregularities.

I would recommend putting quotations around it.

The whole essay is based around the word basically. I do explain what it means but it still isn’t a real word. Would either of you like to read it?

I can read it if you want. (I’m a senior, but I’m done with all my apps.)
