Hi,

My son is applying to Princeton. He has all the scores, grades etc. Went on the tour and information session a month ago and really liked it. He would like to spend a couple days and an overnight, but it seems a bit difficult to arrange. Does anyone have any advice or contacts on how to get this arranged? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I called Princeton, and I was told that you cannot arrange overnight visits. However, there is some period of time when high school seniors who have been admitted get to visit campus.

The university does not sponsor over night visits for all 25,000+ applicants. However, many high school students that have a friend at Princeton do stay in their friend’s dorm room and attend classes and talk to professors.

The university sponsors two weekends in the spring for admitted students to stay with a student in the dorm, eat with Princeton students, visit classes and attend social events. The spring weekends are called Princeton Preview. The April Preview weekend runs Thursday through Saturday.

Here is a link to a description of a Preview weekend. [Princeton Alumni Weekly: Admitted students preview campus life](<a href=“Issues | Princeton Alumni Weekly”>Admitted students preview campus life | Princeton Alumni Weekly)

There are many public events that are open to the public that your son could attend. The Public Event calendar lists such events. [Princeton University – Public Events Calendar](Events | Princeton University)

One other time I am aware of prospective students visiting overnight - recruited athletes are sometimes asked to visit the campus, staying overnight and meeting with the coach as well as the current team. Official visits of this type have the costs of travel, accomodation and meals covered. NCAA rules limit the number of official visits that an athlete can make - once per school and a total of 5 schools I believe.

Before doing an overnight visit at a school, I would wait until acceptance, unless the school is a safety school, or at least a 50-50 shot.

Since the chances of getting into Princeton or any other Ivy is low, I would wait until acceptance before spending the time for an overnight visit. In the mean time, have him do overnight visits at the schools where he is likely to get in. If your son is accepted, Princeton will pair your son up with a student for an overnight visit; I assume the other Ivies will as well.

When I was at Princeton, the school had fewer applicants, and would arrange for them to stay with a student overnight before acceptance. We hosted no end of kids, and most didn’t get in. Your son probably won’t have eight surprises come April 1, so if he has spent overnights at his likely and safety schools before then, the month of April won’t be total panic as he chooses his college.
