So I have been reading Cal Newport’s book on “How to be a High School Superstar” and followed his advice on pursuing a passion and building something meaningful. So I have the first part done and am currently have a heavy interest in the culinary field. However, problem with that is how do I build on from that? He advises to join an organization and “pay your dues”, but in my case what can I really build upon? Any ideas on where to start?
Many Vo-Tech Institutes and community colleges offer programs in the culinary arts.
Get a job at McDonald’s or Jack in the Box, etc and slowly move your way to higher tier restaurants and learn the craft.
Apply to Davis and other schools known to shine in the culinary arts.
Maybe you could start a blog with your recipes on it!
My school has a Culinary Club. Any chance you could start one at your school?
At my high school, we have food prep/cooking classes as electives. Does your high school have any cooking classes that are electives? Can you take cooking classes at an organization or community college? That could be a nice EC as well. Getting a job at a restaurant or in the food-related field is also a great idea.
My old high school had a cooking club, I was in it for a year and a half. I hated that high school, but even so I did have some fun! You could start one if your high school doesn’t have one. You could also attend a cooking club at the Y.
In NJ, we have a tech high school in every county. Students do half-day or full day, and culinary is one of the career paths. You could take these classes at a CC if you don’t have a tech high school.
You could also get a job at a restaurant, which could help with saving for college!
Take some cooking classes in the community if there are any. You might find one at adult education programs which often occur in the evening. Or get really good at a particular cuisine and teach some classes.
