How to Start a speech and Debate club

My school does not currently have a speech and debate club and I would very much like to start one. Problem is I have never been involved in one and I doubt any teacher who I could get to sponsor the club would either. Is there some resources that would teach me how to manage a speech and debate club as well as how to find competitions to enter?

Check out nflonline.org. They have resources for new teams, information about registering your team, and rules and demonstrations for each debate event. Joyoftournaments.com lists tournaments by state.

Debate is a lot of fun, the problem is, you HAVE to have an adult coach. They don’t need a whole lot of experience (and there’s videos for them on the NFL website too), but they just have to be willing to sign off on stuff and be with you at tournaments. It can be a parent volunteer if you run it by the school, but there has to be someone.

Omg, you’re missing out then!

First, you should find a league you can join. There is the National Forensics League (NFL), and the National Catholic Forensics League (NCFL, I’m a part of this). It doesn’t matter if your school is catholic or not, just another league. Then, they will have different divisions and regions (ex. I’m a part of the Washington Archdiocese under the NCFL). I think you have to talk to your region leader. Check the websites for NFL and NCFL.

I’m in speech and it’s actually fun! It doesn’t require a huge time commitment (unlike debate at my school) because most of your practicing is done on your own time. Find an adult, it doesn’t have to be a teacher (but it preferably should). Any type of teacher is good. Maybe ask around the different departments or send out an email asking if anybody is interested. Good luck, future forensicator!

Unfortunetly we don’t have any adult coach at our school, we coach ourselves. We do however have a debate coordinator who enters us for competitions and stuff. I’m sure you can find an interested teacher who’s prepared to at least that.
