How to start tutoring

Hello I’m in 9th grade and I want to tutor 8th graders.

Any advice on where to tutor and how to do it?

I think I want to charge $10/hour - $20/hour.

Thank you!

Check with your school’s math team leader (if you have one/want to tutor in math) or department chair. I know NHS has tutoring but freshmen aren’t allowed to join NHS (I’m in the same position). Also you might want to check with the department head/guidance counselors at the junior high; sometimes you could do the tutoring at school for convenience. If you’re in a high level of math/science/whatever you want to tutor in, you might even be able to tutor other freshmen. If you’re willing to work for free, some volunteer organizations count that as service hours, so if you need service hours ;)… Though I think the price sounds pretty good as it is.
Good luck!

My children’s school had large numbers of students who tutored. They found jobs through the career center.

I don’t think you will be able to get $20 per hour, no matter how good you are.
Those rates are charged by some tutoring centers who hire college students.

see if you can post on any neighborhood grouos, such as NextDoor. prices usually depend on your area so ask around- going rate for high school students is $15-35 here depending on the subject/difficulty level.

What is it you can tutor for money? You don’t seem especially accelerated to be able to teach 8th grade? If you want to tutor find your local title 1 middle schools and offer your time for free. You will need to be able to show some skill set if you want to teach for money. I am not sure where that is apparent. The kinds of kids I have seen tutor are tutoring like minded kids (motivated) and were often especially accelerated in Math (BC as a soph, that kind of thing, they had obvious smarts). You might help out with elementary age children?

@Sybylla

Look. I’m already going to have to tutor French by the order of the French Honors Society. I’ll see how I do before I start charging money for other subjects.

You are in French 2. How does that work?

@Sybylla

I tested into French 2. I did well enough on the test to exempt French 1 in the first place.

@Sybylla

Or if you’re asking how I got into French Honors Society: It is for students who get a cumulative average of 3.0, an A average in french, and be in french 2 or higher.

NO, I am asking how anyone with only 1 semester of French 2 (and no french 1), considers themselves capable of tutoring. What are you planning in teaching?

@Sybylla

I went to a french school every Saturday since I was very young, I’ve been to France a multitude of times and was able to speak to everyone pretty fluently (but sure there were a few times I didn’t know a word every few conversations), I have an A in French 2.

I believe that I can handle tutoring French 1 students every so often.

I dont need a college degree for this.
