Indians are Asian.

Lol. Although technically, India is a subcontinent and most don’t refer to them as Asians. Same thing with Middle Eastern people, they’re not referred to as Asian, although geographically it’s correct.

I’m not sure I would bring this up to your parents, but given that the B is there to stay, here’s my assessment of what it really means for your college record. And given that you’ve come here…I assume that’s why they’re upset. If you are going for a STEM major and it is your only B, I think strategically it is the best subject that you could have gotten a B in. It is not a STEM class, yet English can be a challenging class depending on the teacher. Some will grade students’ writing more vigorously than others do.

Hopefully they will calm down and at least reinstate your sports. If they seem to be holding firm, promise to read the novels required for next year’s English class in exchange for getting your tennis back.

I’m Indian. I want to go into business but will this B affect me negatively. Also, there is no way sports will be reinstated for me

No it wouldn’t be a big deal. A B+ is still pretty much very above average

I mean no sports is going to hurt your chances of getting into college more.

Yeah, but my parents don’t understand. I do have other extra curriculars such as debate, interact, science fair, and hopefully nhs

If this is your only B I have no doubt you’ll be in NHS, as long as you are at least minimal in service and good in character.

Yeah, my chances of getting into nhs are pretty high

In terms of sports, perhaps show your parents some studies that extoll the value of exercise. There are many studies in animals and humans that show exercise is good for cognitive function.
<a href=“Phys Ed: Can Exercise Make Kids Smarter? - The New York Times”>http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/09/15/phys-ed-can-exercise-make-kids-smarter/

If OP’s parents are anything like mine, and they seem like kindred spirits, they’re not going to care about the studies. They’re going to say something along the lines of, “Study makes you smarter not sports.”

Could you make some kind of argument about grade inflation? Most people have 4.0s because their school is too easy, not because they’re really smart. If you got As all the time, I bet none of them would even mean anything. You become smarter by being challenged, not by doing things you already know how to do.

Lol, don’t worry OP. Your parents will yell at you for a couple of days, and for the next two years they’ll bring this up (“Remember when you got an 89?! That’s because you’re lazy! Go study!”) but they’ll eventually move on.
Hahaha gotta love Indian parents <3
And if you need someone to commiserate with, I have to tell my parents about my B in physics soon :D

Just got a 80 on a big Precalc test… Lol

I’m Indian and my parents wouldn’t ground me over a B (actually, they’ve never grounded me). OP, your parents are seriously over-reacting, but I’m sure they’ll get over it. But wow, grounded the WHOLE summer with no TV and no sports??? That’s really harsh. I’m sorry you’re going through this, dude.

Sometimes I just hid my grades on tests and stuff because my parents are Indian, luckily my school does everything on powerschool and doesn’t send out report cards anymore. The worst grade I got a core subject was a C+ in math in 6th grade and my mom flipped out for like a day and then was like w/e. Worst grade in middle school was a F in Latin and mom was like it’s a language so w/e. High school has been easy due to powerschool.

Well thanks for the advice

I feel ya, man, but tell your parents that your life depends on you not them.

I have a C+ in Spanish, but I have an explanation for that. See if an explanation will try to appease them.

Don’t worry. If your other grades are good, then you can still apply to top tier colleges.

Yeah. The thing for me is my weakness is writing essays in english. It screws me up a lot and I can’t get help from anyone either

I’m South Korean and I just ended my junior year with a B- in bio honors and a B (B flat, not a B+) in AP Chem.
My parents were disappointed but they and I both know I’m not going into a STEM field (like Pre-med or engineering), and they knew I’m not that good at science, so they let go pretty quickly.

Please tell your parents that you might be a bit weaker in English than in science/maths… they might not overreact next time. People who get straight As in both English, History, sciences, AND Maths are very rare.
