Hi I’m a senior in highschool, I start CC in the fall and was wondering if anyone could give me any tips on how to succeed in community college and get into the uni of my choice! Any advice would help any tips any of you have would be very much appreciated! I didn’t do great in highschool, I have a 3.2 gpa, not really and EC’s expect my job and I just started at volunteer job at the children’s hospital so I just wanted any tips on what things i should do to be successful, I guess.
- Sit in the front of the class. Surround yourself with students who want to be there and work hard.
- Do all the assigned work. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking, “it’s only one assignment. . .”
- READ your textbooks.
- Challenge yourself with an honors class or two. This will prepare you for a four-year school.
- Involve yourself in the campus in some way (clubs, student government, etc.)
- If you’re struggling, take advantage of the college’s resources. Most community colleges have good support services like tutoring and counseling.
- Use the college’s advising services so you can stay on track to transfer and to ensure you are taking the right courses.
- Stay on campus after class to study or participate in an event or club. This way you can avoid the temptations at home: tv, video games, etc.
- Treat college as your main job for this part of your life. If you have to work, keep your hours low. View your education as an investment in your future.
A long list? Yes, but the essential thing for you to do is to ENGAGE. This can be harder sometime at a community college, but making a conscious effort to engage in your classes and other campus activities will make all the difference.
Good luck!
