Visiting Colleges

I’m going into junior year, which means soon I’m going to have to start visiting schools. I have an idea of which schools I would like to go to, but since I went to Summer@Brown, I know that a college’s website and viewbook are much different from the seeing the actual school. So, anyway, I just had a few questions…

When did you start visiting colleges?

How many did you visit?

Did you visit all the schools you applied to? All the schools you were accepted to?

Were the visits useful?

Did you do any of those weekend things (I know some school have accepted students weekends and things like that) or overnight stays? Were they more useful than just a tour?

How many hours did you spend at each school? Did you tour multiple schools in one day?

Did you do a single multi-day tour of many schools, or did you tour on separate occasions?

Thanks!

there's a place on this site of stuff like this.

B-)

oh, i know about the visit report sections, but I was hoping for more general information about visiting colleges, not about about specific college visits.

Try to ask more questions than your parents. If you think your folks are likely to ask confrontational questions (there was this one woman up in Princeton last week you wouldn't believe), try to give them the slip in the parking lot.

Seriously, if you think one of your parents is going to ask many strange/obvious/angry questions, or just act like a b**** generally, try to keep him/her away. I don't have this problem myself, but I've seen the results on many occasions.

When did you start visiting colleges?
At the end of junior year I went to some campus just to look around. I didn't do official visits until senior year.

How many did you visit?
about 10-12 total, but I ended up going back to some of my top choices a couple times.

Did you visit all the schools you applied to? All the schools you were accepted to?
yes. most were before applying, but I applied to one without visiting. I visited that one after being accepted.

Were the visits useful?
Extremely useful. I completely changed my opinions on several schools after the visits.

Did you do any of those weekend things (I know some school have accepted students weekends and things like that) or overnight stays? Were they more useful than just a tour?
the overnight visits are extremely useful, but I think it's better to do after acceptance if you're trying to make a decision. I didn't find the weekend visits at all useful, it's better to go individually so you can actually get a feel for the campus.

How many hours did you spend at each school? Did you tour multiple schools in one day?
usually several hours at least. I tried to leave a day for each school, because it can get pretty exhausting.

Did you do a single multi-day tour of many schools, or did you tour on separate occasions?
A combination. I did seperate trips in a specific direction where I'd visit 2-3 schools.
