How to write an e-mail asking for an internship with a university professor?

Greetings,

I am to be attending American University this fall, but am hoping to attend an Ivy League school some point in the future. I’ve read that a great way to improve your application is to intern for a professor, however I am at a loss for how to write a letter to one. As well, what are the chances of getting the internship if I have not even began university? Should I write letters to professors at prestigious schools like NYU or Stanford?

Let me know!

Internships tend to be what you do with organizations and firms – with professors, you would normally be asking for a research assistantship. I think your best bet is to wait until your fall semester and then ask your professors if they hire undergrads. You would be in a better position to make the case that you have genuine interest in their work if you were actually enrolled in their classes. You might not even get a response if as a high school student you are emailing random professors.

Oh, okay. So, let’s say I’m majoring in psychology at American University. Should I e-mail professors of other universities that teach psychology as well for an internship?
