Extra credit is only for problem sets and you can’t go over 100%. Difficulty of the material is easy, and MEL works where you can eventually just get the answers if you go through it enough as it recycles questions and gives you the answers. MEL does not help you for exams since I missed a session and the professor said not to study it for the test.

The class is not as bad as it seems and the curve is generous. Extra credit is given that goes toward your overall grade, unlike MEL problem set only extra credit, and it accounts as full percentage points to your overall grade (re: EC is 2 points = 2% added). Fall 2012 was able to give 5% extra credit with 2% for econ salon (listen to a student go over an econ concept) and 3% extra credit problem set.

I got averages on the midterms and an A on the final. Got an A in the course.

Myeconlab is mainly used to just hedge yourself, it gives you freedom to do poorly on a few psets. I’d agree with goldenbear2014, at first I thought the class was tough because I was getting averages (B- to B+s) on the midterms, but then I got an A on the final and ended up with an A in the course. Although I have heard of a couple people who had As on the midterms but got C’s or B’s on the final and ended up with B’s. So I guess the key takeaway is to do well on the final haha

Thanks guys :)! Yup, I’ve heard semi great things about Kamala’s grading. I hope she’ll still have those extra credit assignments this semester. Nervous nonetheless :(! Haha.

One last thing: The class was curved based on your GSI’s 2 sections right? I remember asking this on the first day of class last semester, but the GSI said he didn’t know.

The curve is based on the entire class. No section curving, but some GSIs do grade the problem sets easier than others! Also your GSI was the one who would grade the extra credit. So it’s a bit subjective. Kamala mentioned smoothing it out later but I don’t know any details on that.

Regarding the curve and GSI’s grading ease, my GSI’s average on the first problem set was significantly lower than the rest of the class because of his grading, so it was curved up by 3 points. That may have been the smoothing she talked about or something.

Thanks for the reply so far guys. It’s definitely making me less nervous about Kamala because the everything was so vague when I went to her first lecture.

How was office hours (with the GSIs)? For Econ 1, the GSIs were pretty helpful on explaining the psets (pretty much work us through the problems we were struggling with). Since the psets for Econ 100A are graded based on correctness, I assume they were more vague/discreet during office hours?

Depends on your GSI. Mine was extremely helpful. All the OH are listed for each GSI & the professor so I knew some students who went to more than one if they didn’t get the help they were looking for.

I also think this semester will go more smoothly in terms of the class. She improved the lectures and the handouts mid-semester and those notes were really helpful in learning the material.

That sounds great. I am kind of looking forward to the class now. Hopefully she doesn’t change things up too drastically. Thank you so much goldenbear :)!!!
