i was so upset when i set my account today at webgrants to see i wasnt even eligible for any cal grant. i am transferring in the spring 2013 and it shows that i am a C2 'Non-entitlement applicant who submitted on-time applications prior to September 2 deadline, be enrolled in a community college prior to September 2 deadline.' and it says 'Not Awarded'. i have efc 0, family income is about 30k with 6 people household, and i have a 3.5 gpa. seriously i wasn't even considered. my other sibling was awarded with cal grant by the time he graduated. i think im too late to appeal now cus it was completed 1/10/12. is there anything i can do. im going to transfer to a private college and need all the money i can get.

can anyone help me out with this?

Is the problem that your federal aid of a Pell Grant and student loan met your “need” at a CC?

a Cal Grant will not be awarded if fed aid meets need. If you got a Pell Grant and a fed loan, that’s already about $11k. How much do you need for a Calif CC???

BTW…which private college will you be transferring to? Even if you get a Cal Grant for THAT school, it will likely be a “drop in the bucket”. If that school doesn’t “meet need” then it won’t be affordable even with a Cal Grant.

yes pell grant already had me cover for cc, but since im transferring in the spring i think it’s too late for it? im transferring to Chapman where it is need based but not 100%. what do you mean when say “drop in the bucket”?

Schools that dont meet 100% need are not obligated to make it feasible for everyone to attend. ( even the ones that do meet need, use additional information besides FAFSA to determine need)
They could meet 80% of need and that could mean one student freshman year gets 95% of need met and sophomore year 65%.

Do California universities have an articulation agreement with Ccs to accept students with an AA certificate?
That may be a more workable plan to obtain a BA for yourself & your family.

Cal grants for private univs are about $4k per semester…so that’s a drop in the bucket for Chapman’s costs.

Was your Cal Grant denied for next semester at Chapman? What was in your Chapman aid pkg?

Aid pkgs for spring transfers often aren’t that good. You may need to ask to start next fall and get a better aid pkg.

on the webgrants website, it shows that fafsa was submitted on 1/10/12. i dont know how i can re-apply for it for my spring.

Federal Pell Grant $2,775.00
Founders Scholarship $5,000.00
Chapman Grant $6,350.00

these are only grants and scholarships. tuition for chapman is around 20k. and they told me that i cant stack the chapman grant with cal grant which is werid because i know a student who was accepted that got both chapman grant and cal grant making her tuition almost covered.

I don’t know about Chapman’s policy about getting their grant and a Cal Grant. You may need to ask about that. Your friend may find that one of her grants will “disappear”.

If you can’t get both the Chapman grant AND the Cal Grant, then you’re better off getting the Chapman Grant.

you should also ask what kind of Chapman grant will you get for next year (TWO SEMESTERS). Will the Chapman grant be divided into two semesters? If so, you’ll be very short next year.

If you didn’t take a loan this year, then you can borrow $6500 for next spring (if you have soph standing). However, next year your loan will be divided in two for each semester.

Do you live at home? It looks like you may still be short of funds.

chapman grant should be x2 next fall. so i would be getting ~12k. but my question is about the Cal Grant. i just want to know if im even considered to recieve cal grant.

It looks like because you didnt need the Cal grant for CC, you might not be able to get it at Chapman.
If you had been recieving Cal grant B, then they could just transfer the monies to your new school, but since you werent, Im guessing that since it is well past original deadline, they dont have a procedure to start it up.

You need to contact Chapman’s FA dept and ask these questions.

Also, ask what would happen if you delayed your enrollment til next fall…would you get the Cal Grant? If so, how would your Chapman aid change?

OP, my son attends Chapman. Before you give up, call their financial aid office and ask about on-campus work/study programs that might be available. Good luck.
