I'm going to be taking a Kaplan SAT prep course soon. Does anyone have any experience with this prep course? How did you find it? Did it prepare you well enough? What was the best and worst part of it?

I almost done with my Kaplan prep. I thought it was good for people who are scoring in the middle ranges. (1500s) However, if you are scoring high already, (2000s) Kaplan probably won’t help much. From there on, it’s only rigorous self study that will help.

I thought my instructor was pretty good. She’s really peppy. I mean, she’s in a room with a bunch of bored high schoolers, and she’s always smiling and enthusiastic. I’m not sure if this is the same with all Kaplan instructors (probably not) but mine was really positive. I don’t know how qualified the instructors are, but when I told my teacher that colleges can read the SAT essay, she told me they couldn’t… (I’m pretty sure colleges do have access to the SAT essay)

There are four practice tests you take throughout the course. Make good use of them. One thing I like about Kaplan is the answer explanation. Most of the time, the explanation tells why each answer choice is wrong.

Kaplan has this thing called “success tracker” or something online. Watch all the videos, do all the practice tests and quizzes. That is good practice. In class, you will only be doing on section of the three sections of practice in the Kaplan book. For practice, you should do all the other sections too.

omg dude…did yo go to a kaplan in a New York area?^

No, New Jersey.
Why?

Yes. I also think Kaplan is pretty good. I am enrolled in a similar online course, but mine is for the PSAT. How far are you from New York City?

Because there is this Kaplan building on West 56th street between 6th and 7th avenues that is pretty cool to hang out in. Very quiet libraries. Student lounge. Friendly staff. Its all good. Even though I think that most of the population there is USMLE students (I think that’s medical biology study), everyone is welcome.

woah i went to that one as well!^ and USMLE is for people trying to get their medical license.

I go there a lot. I live about an hour away. How often do you go? Or just once?

I live in Astoria, Queens, it was just one subway ride away from my home. Anyways i used to go there last yr, not anymore.

I’ve read that kaplan is most similar to the real tests.

SO I guess they are pretty good. EVen though they are super easy…

Are Kaplan SATs Better than other books’ SATs then?

Probably. I find many mistakes in math (dunno bout the cr or writing… NOt my strong points) tho.

The kaplan practice tests that they give out during the prep course are really good.

Thank you guys for the feedback!

SilverAurora, the funny part is I got a preppy teacher too which is good! She keeps the class feeling lively and we’re able to contact her whenever we need help. Since I tend to score literally in the middle, I guess this course will do wonders for me. THanks for the feedback! I will definately consider those things. Funny I’m from jersey too!

Hossain, yeah the practice tests are good!

I was signed up for a Kaplan on site course, but they pulled a bait and switch on the location. I got a full refund and am taking an SAT course at the community college instead, but still using the Kaplan text. Kaplan provides online practice in their College Prep Advantage program, besides the classes, but unless you are highly motivated, (I’m not), I don’t see how it could be worth the $900 they charge. Most of this you are doing on your own, so you might as well take tests from all of the companies (Collegeboard, Princeton Review, Kaplan, on your own. Each prep book is around $20. Ps. When you call Kaplan, they make you wait on hold forever, and they play the same songs by Simon and Garfunkel…

I think it helped me a lot! The first practice test I ever took was at the first class, and I got an 1820. By the end of the course, i was getting near 2100. Ended up with a 2330 in march! I would recommend it, just to know where to start studying, more materials for studying, etc.
