Hmm, true. I wonder what percentage of people internationally can name all the Ivys... or even people in the US!

^Very small. I only could after spending time in this forum. I could name all those good in engineering but I never bothered to memorize the names of the universities in the ivy league.
Of course I'm pretty sure Penn State is more famous than UPenn ;)

ilovecalifornia, I'm not offended because you think Berkeley is better known. The problem is that you don't understand that it's what you THINK. People around the world think differently than you. How can you tell them that if they don't have the same opinion as you, they're wrong, pathetic, and can't understand English?

The people voicing their opinions on this thread probably are biased because they have always heard of Stanford more than they had heard of Berkeley, and for that reason (among others) they chose to apply to Stanford. I'm sure there are people out there, as you say, who have often heard of UC Berkeley. I don't think any of us is trying to say that, for the whole world, "Stanford is more famous than UC Berkeley." I think the people on this thread are just people from around the globe, sharing which colleges they had heard of most from their homes. To you, Berkeley is better known? Cool.

Let's just be mature about this (I know I sound like a parent, but I'm very serious) and move on. We have different opinions. We know different things, depending on our backgrounds. End of story.

celest ilovecalifornia not only thinks Cal is more well known; he thinks that its a FACT. He is also being very rude and immature about it. Had he said that he think Cal is more well known I would be okay with that but arguing and assuming he knows better is just plain wrong.

I agree with you, but I'm ready to move on from this =] We're supposed to be learning about Stanford on these boards, not getting all bent out of shape over this.

^ahh you're right. I have to pack I'm going to yuppy Stanford in a fortnight!

its not about opinion. its common sense...what if i said "San Diego State is as popular as UCLA around the world, overall"

would you respect my opinion? no, because you would think its outrageous.

thats how i feel about your opinions of stanford. going to stanford has messed up your perception of how popular it actually is around the world. but hold whatever opinions you want, i couldn't care less. just clarifying why i sound so righteous

Just curious:

Why do you international students want to study abroad, versus in your home country? Secondly, what have you heard about Stanford that makes you want to apply?

P.S. ilovecalifornia, I still don't agree with you, but I think there's been enough arguing on this board. We should let this go. PM me if you want to contest this some more.

i'd say to meet more talented students from around the world, get better education with more resources, widen your perspective on a global scale, and make lots of money. that's why people want to attend top colleges anywhere, and that's why i personally think stanford (or berkeley) is well known around the world.

timetochill, Absolutely!

its cool lol i'm done and your right, it wont get anywhere. its all opinion unless someone comes out with statistics..peace = )

haha i agree ilovecalifornia. more stats plz~

Now that I think of it, Cal may be more known in Asia because of William Hung. OMG, that guy was a joke.

LoL.

My mom is from a rural area in Thailand, and she said her family has actually heard more about Berkeley. When I asked her why, she suggested that it may be because Berkeley is less expensive and therefore more of interest to people she grew up with.

cool.. stanford loses to berkeley again?!

I don't think that the average middle-class Thailander can afford to send their children to UC Berkeley.

sansai has been the one telling us how she turned down Stanford (and Harvard) because it's not as well-known. She's quite an interesting individual, no wonder Stanford accepted (or did it?) her:

Sansai, please tell us again how well the International School of Manila fare in admissions in 2006? How many students were accepted at Berkeley again? How many at Harvard?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_School_Manila With 65% of the large senior class going to the US colleges, that list (I am assuming the first one. lol!) isn't anything out of ordinary (so much for "one of the best upscale high school in Asia"). I'd seen some international school in Singapore has a far better list. Does "very pretty" refer to William Hung?? ;)

Er... the international school of Manila is located in the Philippines, right? Exactly where in the country?

Sam Lee, I think "very pretty" refers to me. :)

so.. i guess stanford is kind of known in the Philippines?
