How well Known are these UK Universities in America?

How well known are Universities such as SOAS, University of London and Kings College London (University of London) in the USA.

Both are part of the federal University of London (being constituent colleges of it). Both have very good reputations in England. How well-known are they in America?

That depends. I definitely know of them, but I know a lot of people don’t. I imagine any company or person who has traveled well or know about anything outside of America should know of them.

I’ve only heard of Kings College of London.

LSE is reasonably well known in the US, UCL and Imperial a bit less so. Most Americans haven’t have heard of the other universities in London.

Most government agencies and groups who hire language specialists will be familiar with SOAS. It’s superb at what it does.

I’ve heard of Kings College London

It doesn’t matter one bit what we think about those places. What matters is what the people whose opinions you do need think about them.

In mainstream popular awareness, they are effectively unknown. The typical American perception is that the UK has Oxford, Cambridge, and a vast Other category. Perhaps London School of Economics sneaks into the known-by-name category for those who follow finance.

However mainstream awareness may affect how one’s alma mater is perceived, it’s awareness in the academic and employment realms that will impact access to opportunities. The academic world is generally well aware of the quality of those schools, and any employer worth their salt who isn’t aware will look them up and quickly see they are among the UK’s top institutions. I know I personally first learned about UC London and Royal Holloway by seeing them on resumes.
