I was wondering how well known the University of Toronto is in the United States. What do both students and employers think of the school? While it does not have the same reputation as that of the Ivies in the US, it is the best school in Canada and it’s still consistently ranked in the top 20 in the ENTIRE world by many ranking tables (even ranking higher than some Ivies according to http://www.usnews.com/education/best-global-universities/rankings?page=2).
So what is the opinion of many US high school students/employers of this school? Is the school considered prestigious to Americans?
For those familiar with it, it’s often thought to be roughly on par with the likes of Cornell, Michigan , & Wisconsin. But a lot of Americans are very ignorant about Canada and don’t even know U of Toronto exists. It’s a wonderful university in the middle of a great city. What’s not to like?
My HS class VP is headed to UToronto this fall - she’s the first person my high school has ever sent to that school, according to Naviance. It’s a fantastic school, better than some here in the US, and I have a great respect for it.
Saying that, I would have hated to attend. It’s too big, and the winters are too cold.
Amazing nightlife bars, and restaurants around the campus, drinking age is 19. Very safe compared to big American cities. Excellent mass transit system. Faculty and research are world-class, but many Americans can’t grasp how a university can be great without super-low admission % (answer: its in a country where vast majority of people aren’t obsessed with prestige and they tend to attend colleges close to home). Enrollment is huge but it doesn’t feel overwhelming…campus is compact and most people belong to a residential “college.”
@moooop, UW-Madison manages to have top academics without insanely low acceptance rates (yet). Agree that UToronto & McGill are peers of UW-Madison/UCLA/UMich.
UT is well known in the states bordering Ontario. McGill and Queens are better know, however. Americans are focused on the Ivys, UCs, UMich, Stanford and a few other US schools for prestige. The only other universities on par in the average American mind are Cambridge, Oxford, and maybe the IITs.
The Indian Institutes of Technology. I have to say, I have heard of them. Like all schools, you haven’t heard of them until you’ve heard of them . . . and now you have.
