We should all file a complaint and petition that the science section was unfair and ridiculous and that we should either have the chance to retake a science section or have 2 points added to our science scores.

seriously i missed the mitosis question and the viscosity one so that automatcally means I can't get above a 33.

But I think the colleges take the writing section into account or else they wouldn't ask for it.

so do would adcoms regard a 34 with 7 on writing in the same light as a 33 without writing or with a 10 on it?"

if you plug the added combined english/writing score i got (31... reg. english was a 35.. ouch), then it's like a 33... so it's really not that bad

and in the science deal, i don't think that'll really work... the petition thing.. i think the curve will just be nicer... and yeah, the mitosis question indirectly made me miss 1 maybe 2 near the end b/c of time.. grr

I'm sorry. The only time I have ever felt that horrible was when I accidentally messed up turining in my history paper on time and got .4 off my overall yearly average.

a 33 is still good enough for all the competitive schools. nice

Yea the thing that ****es me off the most is that I know IPMAT and I probably got those wrong =(. We really should file a general complaint signed on CC maybe (electronically) and sent via email to Iowa (where the ACT headquarter is)

Please... They gave us more information on simple terms such as potential and kinetic energy... but they can't give us viscosity ( I got it right by the way).

I hate to be the one to say, but I actually found the test to be quite "fair." We were told, if anyone did any prep, that we were required to know some basic science terms. Mitosis is simple biology and I feel horrible that many people had trouble with it, but I do feel that ACT asked the simplest of mitosis questions (metaphase=middle; interphase=the chromosomes were densly packed in a large clump).

I have never taken a phsyics class in high school yet (I will next year), but I feel that it is actually my fault for having no idea what viscosity is; I should have reviewed some physics topics before the test. I know that I probably got that question wrong if I was off on my guessing today. (After all, isn't this test supposed to measure our ability in college? We ARE supposed to have and retained some knowledge throughout high school in order to help us in college. It is a college entrance exam.)

Furthermore, I felt that they were really generous throughout many sections of the test...especially the math section. I didn't have an acceptable calculator today so I relied only on mental math and fast figuring. (Shockingly, you really didn't need a calculator anyway.) I was REALLY surprised that for the one trig. question they actually gave us the values of sine, cosine, and tangent! And on top of that, they even gave us the FORMULA to solve the problem (a/SinA, b/SinB, c/SinC).

Come on guys, we can't be spoon-fed EVERYTHING in life. We have to actually work for our high scores and good test grades. I thought that the ACT gave us a lot of rope, but we still had to bring a lot of knowledge to the table as well. Good luck everyone, and stop complaining! You all will do FINE! :)

I felt that that was an easy science section compared to the others i've taken. I'll just have to wait and see if the scores reflect this
However, i was really surprised that this actually did require previous scientific knowledge instead of just reading graphs and tables. Also, 3 of those passages were almost the exact lab/material that we learned in AP bio, making it much easier.

I felt it was incredibly easy but that is what i am worried about. I get the scores back and its like a 21. So the fact i found it easy is making me nervous.

I have seen plenty of act practice exams, and NONE OF THEM required us to know beforehand what specific scientific terms are.

Seriously, if someone can show me a practice act question that demands that you know from prior knowledge what the answer to a problem is, I will give you a million dollars.

THIS IS AN ANOMALY AND A MISTAKE.

THE SCIENCE TEST IS NOT STUPPOSED TO TEST SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE.

And I know I did fine, and my sat score is already good enough for the schools I want to apply to, but the fact remains that the science questions about mitosis and viscosity were f-ed up.

No other act practice test requires such prior knowledge of science.

I got that question wrong and I still agree with AmbitiousMind07. Wow, there is still 92.5% of that test that was handed to us. Maybe if everyone got it wrong, there will be a nicer curve. Let it be.

In truth, the way the mitosis question was set up was acceptable. It required us to call upon our abilities to "reason" because it gave a brief description of mitosis and the phases and then provided us with a series of four pictures that required us to "reason" the sequence of pictures. Unless I just don't remember the question correctly.

On the other hand, the viscosity question was total bogus. I hope they toss it (yes, I got it wrong).

How hard was the viscosity? I mean, I figured that as temperature rose, liquids flow faster. So obviously, from the given graphs, high viscosity means the liquids don't flow as fast as those with low viscosity.

Am I the only one that reasoned through it that way?

the mitosis questions were horrible! I took biology almost 3 years ago. I know what mitosis is, but am I really supposed to remember what all the phases look like? I know I got one or two of those wrong! My science score is going to go down from last time D: hopefully my other scores raise enough to compensate..
