I already forwarded my QB application to respective colleges, but will I have to email each individual colleges to make sure that my common app fee is waived? I heard most colleges' offices are closed until January, though.

if you check the QB site under each school you have sent an application to, it will tell you the process for receiving the waiver and if that school does indeed waive the fee (I think all do though).

All of them just state to select other under fee payment option in the common app, which is why I’m pretty confused right now.

All QB schools waive the application fee for finalists.

It can be confusing because some of the colleges spell out how to apply for the waiver and some do not. The procedure for finalists is to select the “Other” fee waiver option on the Common App and indicate that you are a QuestBridge finalist. (That appears at the last step, when you’re ready to submit.) You don’t have to submit any additional paperwork.

Once the school downloads your application, you know they’ve accepted your waiver and you’re okay.

@ scoutsmom - S has submitted a few apps that he put “other”, but it never asked for anything else for him to indicate QB, so right now, he has “unpaid” applications. I don’t know if the school will download the app without “payment”. Do you know how he can correct this?

There is a drop down menu regarding “community organizations that have provided free assistance during the application process”, on the Common App in the Education Section. It appears just after secondary school information and the question about “education being interrupted”.

QuestBridge is one of the menu options. If checked, it will be included in the print preview. In combination with the fee waiver options it should ensure payment for any QB Finalist.

Yale does require a document that can be uploaded requesting a fee waiver, and within a range of formats. Or, a typed up document to request to “kindly waive” including the students QB ID # will work as well, once uploaded as directed in the common app. payment section for Yale.

FYI,

Mr. VC

^ Can S change that after he’s already submitted his applications?

I guess that’s why a student should go over each question on the app. – a dry run at the beginning to see all of the factors that you are dealing with.

Kind of like completing the parental “work” or practice copy of the FAFSA.

Just as one can click to drop down a menu to select an academic concentration, or drop down to determine class officer roles, sports participated in, or hours worked per week, this one is right there, with a slew of organizations that provide help / support.

The directions from a number of colleges state, “clearly identify QuestBridge”, this is the best way to do it.

If all apps have been submitted there is nothing you can do right now.

I would believe that if QB has forwarded the apps., the respective schools will respond as indicated for each according to the RD process.

You should get a confirmation from each from Common App. that your spplication was submitted successfully. And you should get a follow-up from the school or college indicating that it has received the app. Some will note in the email, or on application tracking the waiver of the app. fee.

If they don’t then you should follow-up, perhaps sending each admiss. office a copy of the email announcing the finalist status. I believe that email went out on 10/21/2011.

Happy New Year to you.

Take care,

Mr. VC

Ah I replied to this, where did it go? Maybe one of the many times the internet connection dropped. But anyway. As S did not receive any help with his essays or his application, he did not choose anything in that drop down menu. He didn’t realize that this is what he needed to choose to get the QB waiver.

I think we’re only talking about 3 partner schools… I think, and they each received his QB app and he listed it as an award, he thinks he’ll be ok, although he did write one school to let them know and then another school he followed your directions, so hopefully all will be ok there.

This is one area that needs to be clearer.

Thanks
