How will Colleges look at hugely different SAT scores?

I just got my SAT results for November and my scores are very similar to my last scores. High Math and Reading and terrible writing.
This time my scores were

CR - 800
Math - 700
Writing - 540 =(

Together its not that high of a score. If I write a really good essay though, will they look at my writing sample more than my writing score?
If it helps, my target schools are USC and Chicago (I know its kind of a reach)

I think those schools mainly look at /1600 composite.

I think your SAT is well within the range of either. Also note for UChicago that test score, though of some importance is considered of lesser importance than grades, difficulty of courses taken, essays and ECs and demonstration of personal traits it believes fit into UChicago.

Yea colleges really don't consider the writing as much as the other sections. They pay more attention to your appication personal essay.

yup yup. some colleges don't even bother looking at the writing section.

Whew thank god. Thanks for the replies.

lol If your major requires good writing skill, the W section will be important as well :D

SAT writing section evaluated by admissions offices nationwide UWIRE: Powered by The Content Generation

usc gives equal weight to the writing

while uchicago doesn't even look at it.

ok?

If you write strong application essays and include at least one school that is less selective (but just as good for you in terms of fit and quality!), then I think you'll be fine!
