I will be a freshman in fall and I'm offered to live in unit 3 standard triple, which wasn't even one of my choices and incredibly inconvenient. I want to experience the dorm life for the first semester and then rent a room near school for the second semester, consider it is much cheaper compared to living in the dorm. Could any of you explain to me how I will be charged for the housing payment? Do I still accept the housing offer and pay the $300 deposit? How does this affect my financial aid? I know some part of the gift aid/loan/work study goes toward paying off the living expenses. Also, what formal procedure do I need to go through in order to move out the second semester?

You should submit the $300 deposit and immediately email reshall@berkeley.edu to request a change. There are many people who would love to live in a Unit 3 Triple but did not get it. If you get lucky, they might just accommodate your request. There is just no guarantee.

If you don’t submit the $300, you aren’t going to live in the dorms.

^i second that
unit 3 is close to campus. plus, units 1, 2, and 3 is where its poppin’ 8)

How is Unit 3 inconvenient? It’s actually closer to campus than 90% of apartments you would find. Plus it’s convinient in other ways (food is provided, you don’t have to worry about utilities, etc.). The only way I would understand is if you were an engineer (especially EECS) or an athlete, and even then, walking across campus isn’t that bad - I know plenty of people who walk from Unit 3 to Cory every day.
