I am an FPF student and I received my housing offer earlier today: I got stuck in Bowles. I didn't put Bowles for ANY of my housing requests. This is the housing that I absolutely did NOT want to get. First of all, it will not be easy for me to spend another $1200 on a quad compared to a triple in the Units. I am already on financial aid. Bowles is also on the complete opposite side of campus compared to the FPF campus... Also, I do not feel entirely comfortable in an all guys dorm. That just isn't for me at all.

I have already sent in a transfer request and mentioned that financially, it isn't practical for me. What are the chances I am able to switch out? When do you think it would be that I could switch out?

HAHA, bowels… Oh, the name just leaves me in convulsions every time I see it. I went to the dorm on CalDay, because I thought such a beautiful Gothic edifice would look as beautiful on the outside as on the inside. Boy, was I wrong. The inside looked like crap! The paint was peeling off, the rooms were rundown, the girls looked like guys, the elevators were stairs, and the common room smelled like a dying goat with maggot eggs hatching inside of it. And don’t let me get to the bathrooms, GOD, I swear, there were dung beetles crawling out of the chocolate-colored human feces left on the bathroom floor. It smelled of rot - not the type you would encounter at a banker’s desk in a multinational finance corporation, but the one you perceive when you confront an untreated cadaver.

fastsauce (or, if I may call you “sadsauce”, as I believe that sobriquet would be more suiting for the situation), you have my full sympathy, and boy, I would hate to be you.

Thanks for the encouraging words… :(

I made it pretty clear in my email to res hall that I am on financial aid and that I really would not like to have to pay an extra $1200 compared to a triple in the Units.

Is it too late to withdraw?

Say you can’t afford to pay it instead of ‘not wanting to pay the extra $1200’. Stress that there is no way you can come up with the money and that was why you chose a unit triple as it was the lowest cost dorm. My friend used that excuse (well it was valid for him since he has little to no financial aid) and they moved him into a Unit Quad (basically a floor lounge, but they made it into a room for 4 people; it was cheaper than a triple).

My exact words were that it “would not be easy for me to pay the extra $1200.”

Send them another email saying you’ve talked over this with your parents and there is no way you can find the money for Bowles Dorm. Phone call them if you have to. It’s better to make your point clear instead of being shy because you got nothing to lose anyways. Also, try emailing the undergrad financial aid email. Talk about your problem with them (be sincere since they might be able to talk to the ResHall people to fix your problem).

If you let this slide through for the next few weeks, you’ll be stuck at Bowles… You need to strike when the iron is hot because they are most likely switching people in and out at this moment. If you let them ignore you now, they’ll just be like: Why didn’t you call or make this problem apparent early on?

switch to off campus housing and look into getting an apartment or renting a room in a boarding style house? i did it when i was in FPF and didn’t feel like i missed out on anything. plus you’ll save money.
