How will I fare in high school? (8th Grader)

I am currently in the eighth grade, in a public school system in central Texas.

In the fall of 8th grade, I took the Algebra I Credit-by-Exam (two weeks into the course) and skipped the class, going on to Pre-AP Geometry.

In early Spring this year, I took the Algebra II Credit-by-Exam (while taking Geometry), thus skipping Algebra II and now I'm guaranteed for Pre-AP Pre-Calculus in the 9th Grade (as long as I finish Geometry in the classroom).

This summer, I'm taking the Pre-Calculus Credit-By-Exam so that I can take AP Calculus BC next year as a high-school freshman.

Because of my special case, I have already had a one-hour meeting with the 9th Grade Counselor, the IB Coordinator, the Math Coordinator, and the Science Coordinator of my future high-school. They seemed very impressed with me during the meeting.

Surprisingly, I took a TAG (talented and gifted) test in the second grade and did not pass it. I started learning Algebra I in the 4th grade.

I am very talented with writing poetry and playing the piano. I am also adept at computer programming, the use of multiple operating systems (such as some Linux-based ones like Ubuntu), image-editing, video-editing, and desktop-publishing (lol).

I was a member of the National Junior Honor Society.

Also, this summer, I will be registering for the SAT Subject Test: Math Level 2. Taking it this fall and getting a perfect score is my top-priority.

Getting into the IB Program and becoming the best person ever are two of my top-priorities.

I am Asian-American, my parents both graduated from the best university in the Philippines. My father's a computer programmer, and my mother is a nurse - combined they're making approx 150k a year.

What's tragic, however, is that my grade in French is steering between 89 to 92 every six weeks. (Yeah, it's pretty difficult) I suppose that this would translate into something like a 3.0?

Also, my Geometry grade is steering between an 85 and 92 every six weeks. (mostly because I don't do the homework!) Terrifying.

Most terribly, my Health grade has been at 82 and 88. (also because I don't do the homework) Aaaack!

I've always dreamed of Princeton, Stanford, MIT, and Duke...

But how do I fare so far as an eighth grader nearing the end of the school year?

Uhhh…why are you asking this question? You are obviously not worried about how you’ll do in school, and youre not fooling anyone. As for the extra math classes, that doesnt make you some sort of math genius, it makes you someone who has the time for extra math classes. You sound like a smart kid and im sure you can go anywhere you want for college, but you should get out there and live a little. Also build up you EC list, maybe play some sports.

ha, i giggled.

I lol’d.

(I really hope this is a joke, but if it’s not your focus in HS should be anything but academic. You need to direct all of this intellectual energy and ambition toward making friends, getting a chick, and drinking some drugs.)

A 92 in geometry??!?!
Might as well notify the manager at ur local mcdonalds that ur going to be working there for the rest of ur life…lol

Okay, I agree with the above people, you need to not worry. You will be fine. I have a question for you: If you take AP Calc BC as a freshman, what will you take during the rest of high school?
I am willing to help though. For me, one of the biggest things in high school is homework. not only will it give you credit and raise your grade, it is necessary to mastering difficult subject material. I didnt do my homework in Honors Geometry last year and ended up receiving an 84 final average as a result. Do ur homework!

dreamsofivy: That’s a good question. I’m guessing multivariable calc? But I have no idea what’s after that.

So, onto the main topic. I’m impressed. An 8th grader achieving what you have accomplished is great. However, your performance in high school is not something that people can “chance” you on. It would be better for you to keep on doing what you love to do (and maybe throw in some ECs while you’re at it) and come back when you’re ready to apply for college. It’ll be interesting to see you again. I’m sure you know very well that you will excel in high school. This is not something to worry about (for you or for anyone else).
Just do the best you can, make new friends, and have a great experience. That’s what high school’s all about (besides the academics).

Calm down. Do your hw and get the A’s. Honestly, middle school doesn’t matter that much. As long as you do your hw and with your intelligence you should be fine. One last thing: have a life in high school, do some EC’s, and have fun. Studying isn’t everything. Have fun being a freshman next year since it’s the only year you can screw around in.

First of all, you are doing very well, but to really show off yourr skills you need to make sure you do your HW in High School. There are lots of kids on here taking calculus in the 9th and 10th grade, but they all seem to be the top in their classes. You may be the smartest person in all these math classes, but the only way anybody will know is by your grades. It would also help to make sure you get 800s on all the standardized math tests, and if possiblie qualify for the USAMO. This will show that you are a real math expert.

I’m sure you are aware that any reasonably intelligent middle schoolers could learn enough of the rudiments to do the squeak by in any math class up to and including first year calculus. The key is not to be able to do enough to pass, but to excel and be able to do the very hardest problems.

You really shouldn’t be on this website.

As for math, the next steps beyond AP Calc would typically be linear algebra, multivariable calculus and differential equations. Some of these are offered on line from various schools, or at local CCs, if dual enrollment is an option for you.

Doing homework in HS is hard sometimes, especially for overachievers, since it’s often seen (and sometimes is) “busy work.” However, it’s rather short sighted to risk a higher GPA and class rank not to just bite the bullet and do it. Plus, putting in the hours of work will get you out of a slacker mode and give you an idea of what’s going to be required at virtually any college, because it WILL be a step up.

Get off this site, play some football or something, go out and enjoy the open, let this site remain for upperclassmen and college kids

As far as true achievement in Math goes, go through the USAMO scheme. Doing AP Calc as a freshman is nice, but i all honesty anything that is not proof-based mathematics is not what I would call “real math”.

But the real crux of the matter is that you seem quite intellegent and high school shouldn’t be too difficult if you put in some effort, so don’t worry.
