How will medical schools look at GPA from multiple schools?

Hi everyone,
I was a medical student in Vietnam from 2013-2014. After evaluation, my GPA was 3.38 (45 credits). When I came to the US, I started going to community college, and my GPA is 4.0 (56 credits). I still have 2 more years to finish my bachelor’s degree. However, I don’t know how medical schools look at my GPA. My courses from VN were not used at all, but I don’t know if it affects my chance to get into a good medical school or not.
Thank you.

Not sure how to answer the Gpa calculation question. But want to confirm that you are not an international student when you start to apply for med school two years from now. Otherwise, if you are still an international then, it is almost a moot issue about applying for med school.

I am permanent resident but study high school outside of the US. Somehow, my process of admission was still the same with international student even though I got GED diploma. Hopefully, they are not gonna see my grades in VN as a big issue. Thank you!!

According the 2018 AMCAS Instruction Manual, you will need to report that you have previously matriculated at your Vietnamese medical school.

See pp. 26 and 48-50.

You will need to answer “yes” to the question about whether you have ever previously matriculated into med school and list the school.

If so, I have to keep my GPA 4.0 for all my 127 credits to get my GPA >3.8. If not, it will be a big issue, right? Thank you!

You are required to report the grades earned at your Vietnamese medical program, but you will need to apply for transcript exception. If that’s granted, you do not need to have an official transcript sent to AMCAS and those grades will not be used when calculating your GPA.

I cannot tell you if AMCAS will grant you a transcript exception. You’ll have to ask them.

Thank You so much!!
