I am a half white (European), half Asian (Filipino) female. Is this considered multiracial? As a Filipino, am I grouped in with all other Asians (Chinese, Korean, etc.) or am I viewed differently? I was definitely not raised in the stereotypical “Asian” fashion, and my Filipino heritage is extremely important to me as my mother is an immigrant from a remote province in Iloilo. Furthermore, is being half-white and half-Asian an advantage or a disadvantage? I’m interested in biochemistry and mathematics and applying to top schools (my #1 is GA Tech). I know race is obviously not the deciding factor, but I do have extremely good stats otherwise and was wondering how it would affect me.
Many schools don’t care about race at all, so it will be neither a plus nor a minus. Some forms have a ‘multi’ box to check and then you can fill in what races you identify with. Some schools do just have one ‘Asian’ box as a choice but others let you write in anything you want, and some even have a separate box for Filipino.
I really don’t understand why the detailed race, religion, and education of parents questions are on the applications. Shouldn’t colleges just be looking at students stats, ECs, Essays and qualities to determine if they should be admitted? I mean really, I thought race and religion didn’t matter in this country? That’s what I was always taught at home and at school.
You are not going to have an advantage because of your race.
