Hey, I was wondering how willingly (so to speak) Berkeley would recruit for sports. I'm a junior in high school, and have an average/weak GPA (3.66/4.16, though HUGE upward trend after 1st semester 10th grade), and 2240 SAT score. I was wondering, if I were to get into Berkeley (purely hypothetical), would sports be a turning factor? I run track/cross country, and I know I can at least walk-on to the Berkeley teams; I was just wondering how much this would help. Thanks!

If you are someone who really has NCAA-level times, then sure, it'll be a help in admissions. It depends on how good you are - walk-on vs. recruit. Get in touch with the track coach. If you don't have the time you need to be recruited, then no, they don't care that you run track any more than they care that you wash the feet of the homeless. Thousands of other applicants are involved in sports as well.

Your GPA isn't 'weak,' especially considering your SAT score.

Thanks for the reply. My times are just over 5 minutes for the 1600 (~mile) and just under 11 minutes for the 3200 (~2 mile). I was wondering if anyone knew the "recruit" time, or a time that would have the coaches take an interest in you/something that would help your chances.

I'm a basketball person myself, but you can look at the statistics they have up for Cal women and compare yourself.

California Golden Bears - University of California

Assuming you're a girl then those are pretty good stats, but for the guys at least it's kinda far from the threshold. Cross country runners at my school (went to State for it) run miles about 4:45 or so. That's for the males at least, and some of them got scholarships to mediocre schools but I don't know of any getting a offer to even UC schools.

Regardless of your track I would still focus on performing well on SAT II's and doing community/volunteer service. Your SAT's and GPA are fine.

Yea, I'm a girl. If I was a guy, I would have no chance at walking on with the talent that Cal has got (Matusak, Coe, Ghebray, etc) :P. I think ~5 minute mile for a girl is equal to around 4:17 for a guy (those are the high school elite cut offs).

Thanks for the link, I'll definitely take a look. The rule is that a coach can talk to an athlete after the athlete's junior year in high school right?

Just with the GPA/SAT alone (and I have good SAT II scores, 100+ hours of community service etc), would I have an at least decent shot at Berkeley?

Some girl at my school got recruited for golf at Cal. She is nuts... I think she's in the LPGA already even though she's only a senior in HS. She isn't too bright, either.
