Howard vs. American and GWU

So far I've been accepted into Howard and American, I'm still waiting on George Washington.

When I look at the rankings of the universities in DC, Howard is above American and GWU, but when I look at the rankings in USNWR, American and GWU are above Howard.

Which one do you think is better when it comes to academics, internships, alumni connections, campus life and location?

Im planning on going to law school and getting a jd/mba
either majoring in marketing or philosophy

bump…?

I would rank them in this order: American, GWU, Howard. That’s looking at the “whole picture” and it’s subjective because American and GWU are strong favorites of mine. I would rank American first because it has a “real” campus. Howard is all business. GWU is somewhere in between the two. GWU is actually my favorite school. I would rank American as the top choice for academics (not too much, not too little, a good mix), alumni connections, and campus life. For location, GWU wins (it’s basically adjacent to the Lincoln Memorial). I would give Howard or GWU tops for internships.

American is in a very nice section of NW DC. I drive by the campus every day on my way to work.

Business Week ranks American much higher for undergraduate business than GW.

American University is amazing. You can’t go wrong with either AU or GWU. If it were me, I would go AU but you have to see how they fit you. Visit the campuses yet?

applicannot - May I ask how you know the schools? Have you been? Known others who attended? I ask because I’m taking my D to visit GWU, AU, and Catholic in a few weeks. I want to know as much as I can before arriving! Thanks!

American is in the Patriot League which is a group of NCAA Division 1 highly selective colleges which enforce an academic index for their student athletes like the Ivy League.

GWU is ranked much higher than American in USNWR ranking of undergrad business schools. GWU is #39 and American is #74. I also personally prefer GWU. It’s right in the heart of the Washington D.C Capitol and office district. Great for law and business internships.

1stteimom:

I have not yet visited these schools, and I don’t attend either (not yet!). However, GWU and AU are my favorite schools right now, so I have done a LOT of research. I’ve also visited all of the Just for Juniors chats at AU. I’ve spoken to students and prospective students from each school. I also love DC. I’ve been there a few times. So, I’m no authority on GWU or AU, but I have some theoretical knowledge.

Oh, and I’m not sure if your daughter is politically minded, but if she is, keep in mind that GWU and AU are generally quite liberal and Catholic is much more likely to be conservative.

I haven’t visited neither campus but IM SO EXCITED about going to DC.

I’m kind of leaning towards American and GWU, since for some reason my mother is so anti-howard. But I’ve been told that GWU campus is much better when it comes to dorms, food and diversity. I’ve also heard that the workload at GWU is a little more rigourus than American

But im guessing when it comes down to internships, studying abroad, and alumni connections its pretty much equal

i have a family member who went to American, and he told me to apply to GWU over American.

yea i have a cousin that goes to GWU that absolutely loves it. She’s a senior there.

I think George Washington University would be a better pick. Though I never really looked much into either school.

applicannot - Thanks v. much! I’m appreciative of all knowledge - theoretical, first-hand, research-rich, you name it! Great point about conservitive campus @ Catholic!

nc - thanks for the topic!

D wants to study Journalism. AU & GWU offer more than Catholic for Journalism, but she’s got a yen to visit Catholic, so visit we will.

Can’t wait for the trip! 2 weeks!
