What exactly was the prompt?

What was the actual topic??

The topic (at least one of them) was "Does having ethics interfere with success?" Or something along those lines.

I said it does, used Macbeth and Steve Jobs. Filled up the whole space, but didn't have enough time to proofread...

I had the ethics vs. success essay prompt.

I wrote two large body paragraphs, my examples consisted of:
1) Holden Caulfield in Catcher in the Rye
2) Boss Tweed, political machine ruler of 1920s New York City

I finished with one line space left.

Do they really only have two minutes to read our essays?

I had the "ethics in success" one. I used complete history. Basically the affects of Imperialism.

-Manifest Destiny
-Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase
-Plains Indians
-Spanish American War: Cuba, Puerto Rico, Philippines
-Mentioned: Alfred Thayer Mahan, The Importance of Sea Power Upon History, and A Century of Dishonor

Only got 4 paragraphs in. My final paragraph was basically a 4th body/conclusion hybrid ><

I hade the ethics one and wrote about
-Issac Newton
-Bill Gates
-My Dad (Doctor)
Ended with 5 paragraphs about 1.5 pages but i write kinda small. I said how if you "succeed" and do not follow ethics, you do not succeed at all. I think i got over a 10

hey ears, i'm curious as to how you used the fountainhead?

i used: gatsby (like everyone else), gilded age industrialism/policies, mentioned native americans, and sorta touched on how all those great empires in the past were built from war (genghis khan, alexander, and caeser)

Quick question. For the essay, did you have to write about an individual's personal ethics, or could you have written about society's ethical standards they put in place that can deter individual success?

i think i did poorly on this essay.
i completely blanked out!

i'm also curious as to how you used the foundtainhead
mind explaining?

"is it sometimes necessary to be impolite?"
i totally blanked, and used rosa parks + personal experience.
i think i did alright though..

i wrote about Lech Walesea of the polish solidarity and Nelson Mandela saying that ethics do not hinder one for achieving success in its truest form

I chose to be conceited by writing about a personal experience. =D

How good does an essay really have to be to get an 8?

Like, if mine was well-written but the examples themselves weren't fully fleshed out or explained, what am I looking at?

Less. A minute. They are not looking for amazing papers. They simply want to see a good first draft. It's relatively easy to score high.

The highest possible is a 12 - 6 from each grader. And a researcher concluded that essays greater than 400 words always received perfect 12s. Obviously they were structured and contained tons of details - but if you can mock that, you'd be in great shape.

I know my essay came to around 370-400 words. Hopefully I get an eleven or so.

What size handwriting at 2 full pages will result in 400 words? I filled up both pages to half a mm (literally), but my handwriting was kind of big. I can't control my pencil when I'm nervous.

How long is 400 words?

I write medium sized and I covered 1.75 pages.

I counted 300 words in my first three paragraphs. I wasn't able to count the last (ran out of time) - but judging by looks - it was longer than my first. So I figured it was around 75-100.

I used Jay Gatsby, Madoff and Governor B of Illinois. Hope they don't count off for spelling.

Easy as hell. Andrew Carnegie for "unethical" practices that resulted in success as well as general benefit (he donated 80% of his wealth to charity) and Great Depression for unethical trading during 1920's which led to it.

horray for Ap us history
