How's premed at Rice?

I've heard a lot of great stuff about Rice so far, but unfortunately I haven't heard a lot about pre-med. Anyone care to shed some light?

How's the courseload, competition, etc.?

Also, can anyone tell me what the acceptance rate into med school is?

Well I can't speak to pre-med coursework specifically, but Rice has one of the greatest locations in the world for allowing you to gain experience in health professions. It is right next to the Texas Medical Center (http://www.texmedctr.tmc.edu/root/en/GetToKnow/FactsandFigures/FactsAndFigures.htm) which essentially is a bunch of different hospitals grouped together with some common services like parking. It is so close that I hear some people who work at the Medical Center park in the profuse parking lots by Rice's stadium and take the light rail to the hospitals and institutions.

Here are some links I found:

http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~acadadv/premeddocuments.html

admittance rate is high - but you might want to email the admissions department and ask them for this information.

^ And if you do, will you please share?

i read on the website that out of the 116 who applied to med school last year, 102 were accepted. so that's around 90%!!!

I just graduated from Rice and am applying to med school next year. Many more people start out as premeds than actually end up applying, but those who do apply usually get in. One thing to consider though, is that a lot of Rice premeds are Texas residents, and there are 8 Texas medical schools, so many Rice premeds go to Texas schools (this, I think, partially accounts for the high acceptance rates...coming from Rice helps Texas residents when they apply to Texas med schools). If you are not a Texas resident, getting into medical school in just about any other state is more difficult (Ca and the Northeast especially) because of sheer numbers of applicants vs available seats.

And Texas residents go to Texas med schools more because they are so much CHEAPER for instate residents. :)
