Since there are so many prospective Owls who want to be premed and go to med school ... lets make one thread.

This will make all info central so we dont have to repeat the same info everyone. New members can read this before asking because it probably has the answers they want.

Advantage:
90% acceptance rate to medical schools.
Texas medical center located pretty much on campus, aka able to volunteer.

Disadvantage:
Rice doesn’t have it’s own medical school (however, I really want BCM to merge with Rice).
Not having a medical school means that there are really that much chance to research at a medical school although little people do anyways.

@cdz512: Even though Baylor is not part of Rice yet, I heard Baylor College of Medicine has a really tight-knit relationship with Rice. I wouldn’t be surprised if undergrads are doing research at Baylor. Rice also recently opened a research facility that is a collaboration between Texas Medical Center and Rice University, and I think undergrads will have the opportunity to conduct research there. Hopefully, current Rice pre-med students can add some insight to these thoughts or correct them if they are wrong.

If I’m not wrong are you talking about the Rice BioE research building?
That just reminds me, you are right, Rice BioE students research at Baylor on altering cell functions and other stuff. And there are some Bio majors that work in collaboration with the BioE and Baylor.

Even though Rice does not have its own medical school, students have a multitude of research opportunities with the Texas Medical Center(largest medical center in the world)… and the tight relationship with Baylor Medical School means even more research opportunities for owls…

yeah, when I went for my BCM interview (Rice/Baylor), you could tell all the profs really respected Rice and Rice students. They said they look favorably upon Rice students in the admissions process and my Rice tour guide said something along the lines of “at least 40 students from Rice every year get into BCM.” I’m not sure if this is true or how many of these 40 actually attend BCM, but it’s still a nice stat.

Not to mention Texas Children’s Hospital is a FANTASTIC resource if you want to become a pediatrician or pediatric specialist of any kind. BCM is ranked #5 in the country for pediatrics because of its proximity to/relationship with TCH.
