Was wondering if any Carleton students or parents could post about the quality and variety of the dining hall food at Carleton. Thanks!

Last year Carleton switched food provider to Bon Appetit, which also provides food for St. Olaf. The quality is very good, variety very good, committed to purchasing locally, etc. However there’s more to a food provider than just the food, as Carleton students learned this year. Changes in labor practices and other policies (taking food out of the cafeteria) were controversial. I think things were getting better by the end of the year, but it was definitely a learning experience.

But yes, the food is quite good.

I’m not a student (yet…knock on wood), but I stayed there for a few days with a friend and the food was great, best college food I’ve eaten out of the six or so I’ve eaten at. :)

The quality of the food tends to start out as pretty good, and steadily decline as term progresses. That being said, Bon Appetit is generally much more palatable than our old provider.

Miscellaneous observations: Soup tends to be really, really salty. Burton’s salad bar is more expansive than LDC’s. If you’re a breakfast eater, LDC’s eggs are better than Burton’s, but Burton has a bigger cereal selection. And definitely proceed with caution on Mardi Gras night.

Any more recent comments on the quality/taste of the food at Carleton? Especially the vegetarian choices?

@MacThespian – the food’s still pretty great! There’s a lot of vegetarian choices you can have in the dining halls – sometimes I find myself eating totally vegetarian at Carleton (even though I’m an omnivore) because the vegetarian foods are so good.

Don’t forget the Malt O’ Meal!
