I'd like to know more of what is involved in the Hispanic Studies major at the College of William and Mary. Sounds interesting but I'd like to know more from the alumni perspective :) thanks!

One of our senior interns is a Hispanic Studies major. We’ve emailed him to see if we can get a reply for you.

Thank you! I read about it in the W&M website and it caught my attention a lot. If I hopefully get accepted, I’m definitely going to be part of it :)

Great. Glad the website intrigued you. If you do get admitted, we’d encourage you to attend Day for Admitted Students and meet with the Modern Languages Department and the Global Studies Department (both will be on hand). That will hopefully help to address your questions.

Here’s the response from our Senior intern

A major in Hispanic Studies is not simply a Spanish major - it encourages each student towards fluency in the Spanish language without boring classes on grammar but rather by tackling literature, poetry, and cultural issues head on. The major usually consists of some type of study abroad experience, an independent research project on a particular region or particular portion of Spanish or Latin American history, and challenging courses that discuss how culture was impacted by things such as Franco’s reign in Spain, state terrorism in the southern cone of South America, and Zapatismo in Mexico.

Thank you so much! Woo! I learned about a lot of that in my Spanish Literature class I took last year… I fell in love with the literature so much that now I want to pursue an education involved in Hispanic Studies… Your response makes me want to join the tribe even more!! Please W&M, email us soon! :D

Glad your interest is peaked. We’ll be emailing decisions this week

Thank you for your time can’t wait!
