why is there no spanish major/minor at william and mary?

does anyone know the reasons why there is no major or minor? I am considering applying next fall; however, I feel it would be a waste since I will have passed the ap spanish lang. and lit. test (for college credit) by the time I go there.
Thanks!

They don’t have a “Spanish” major but they do have Hispanic Studies, which I would argue is the same/similar thing - and is - in my opinion - better

[William & Mary - Hispanic Studies](Hispanic Studies | William & Mary)

as has been posted, there is a major that encompasses Spanish.

Also, just because you don’t get AP credit does not mean it is a waste to apply to a school. You can check which AP tests W&M gives credit for in the course catalog.

lololago and soccerguy are on the ball! The Hispanic Studies major certainly encompasses a foreign language focus but also focuses on Hispanic culture. It’s one of W&M’s many interdisciplanary majors.

Page 50 of the course catalog will outline what AP scores get what credit. Some scores will not get you credit but will get you exemption meaning you don’t have to retake an intro level course (similar to the AP course) even though you will not receive W&M credit for that course.
