You’ll have an overhead light, just like in every other dorm. You should bring a lamp no matter what though, for those (sometimes often) times when you need/want to stay up with the light on and your roommate wants to sleep.

Would we require a lamp if we were placed in a single in IV, or is the light in IV sufficient enough to keep us alert (for late-night studying)?

I think you’d still want to bring a small desk lamp…the lights on the ceiling won’t sufficiently light up your work area.

I just got back from orientation and I went into my exact room in IV which is a single AND i turned all the lights on to see. Its sufficient but I would definitely bring a lamp because the lights are more there as room lights and not area lights.

totally random and i agree with everyones comments, but i just got back from orientation and someone said something about other lights not allowed in the dorms. something about a fire hazard? does anyone know FOR SURE that lamps and whatnot are fine to bring? im pretty sure what i heard was wrong…

Last year at orientation they mentioned string-type holiday lights & lava lamps as being forbidden. Son brought both a desk and floor lamp without any problems. He was in IV and used both a lot.

how did you get to see your room? Did you email the housing department in advance?

does anyone have a floor plan of IV?

i have the floor plan, but i’d have to send it via email. it’s a pdf file

I got into my room because the last day of orientation they do tours and they took us on a tour of IV. Once in IV, the rooms were all open and we were free to go in and look, it just so happened that my room was on the floor we were looking at

All students have access to the floor plans of all the dorms. It’s under housing on your myneu account.

n01an10: do you think the tours are a standard orientation thing? Cause I emailed the housing department just to ask if i could see a regular semi-private double at IV and they were less than helpful.

I can only vouch for last year, but they did take the honor’s students & families on a tour through IV right at the end of the orientation.

i just got back from orientation and on the tour of IV they take you through the rooms.

As normal person said, yeap they do take you through the rooms, but only because they were open. It wasn’t special accommodations

The “other lights” that aren’t allowed are any halogen lights. They get really hot and are a fire hazard. A lot of those floor lamps with the multi-heads are halogen, so check before you buy them. You also aren’t allowed to have christmas lights, but you can usually get away with them if you aren’t obvious about it. Plus if you walk by dorms at night in winter, you can see all of the lights in the windows, but no one actually goes and checks those rooms.

alright, thanks a lot for the answers!
